I am curious about the latest mic suggestions people have specifically for vocals. I dig that Paul Simon clean sound.

Blue bottle with a b7 or b0 capsule currently, i'm liking the Cactus in figure 8 mode. who knows what i'll like in a couple of months

LOL Dot. You're starting to sound like Brad Lyons where every "favorite" thing is at least $10k... :D Only kidding!!! That Sony sure does look sweet!

My favorite vocal mic (right now) is the Soundelux u195. So far I've used it on 4 vocals and everytime, it just hits the spot. I also gotta admit, I love the Rode K2 as well. Very rich sounding :)

My top choices for vocal mics, in no particular order:

Microtech Gefell UM75
Brauner VM1 KHE
Brauner Valvet BE
AEA R84
Soundelux E49

At least 95% of the time, one of those will give me the perfect vocal sound for the singer/song at that moment.
For the small percentage where one of those doesn't, an RE20 or MD441 usually does.

According to Mix, Mr. Simon has used the Neumann M149.

that Neumann M149 looks like one hell of a mic... How the hell do they get that thing to have 9 polar patterns?

By varying the amount of voltage delivered to the front and rear capsules.

IIRC.

Solid Reliable under $500
AT 4050
SP T3
CAD (as high as you can get)
Rode NTK or K2
EV RE 20
Shure sm7

gotta be shure sm7, sm57 or sennheiser 845 (might be 865 i cant remember, we used it on our last demo though)

I really haven't sang enough into any of my mics to make a choice.

Well don't bother posting then! :D

AT4050 is a good shout from Kenny. The Sennheiser E series dynamics have not brought me any recording joy despite being my favourite live mics. The E865 is different, not used it in the studio but was as keen live.

Just got an SP T3, first impressions are that it is not as 'see-through' as the AT4050 but that is probably not the aim of it.

NT5???? One of your two favourite vocal mics is a budget SDC??

I'd go with an Audio-Technica 40 series microphone such as the AT4040, AT4050 or AT4047. The guys over at the 3D Audio forums seem to write the best info on the 40 series mics so you might check over there to get more info.

For under $500- I like Oktava MK319, AKG C2000B, Shure SM7, Rode NTK, B.L.U.E. Baby Bottle.

Fore bigger bucks, I like B.L.U.E. Kiwi, and Soundelux ifet7, but that's just my voice.-Richie

maybe that's all he has. don't talk down.
I'm not. I was surprised he found the NT5 so good that it was preferable to his NTK in some settings.

if they're not sibilant, akg 414, if a little sibilant, nuemann tlm 103, if tons of sibilance, i'd have to ask to borrow a dynamic like the sm7 or re20. damn mics that cost too much for me to have right now.... don't you ever feel like... 'if only i had $400' gah!
