hey, just wondering what anybody likes to mic their toms with, i'm sure everybody loves a 57 on snare, but i might get som mics for my toms instead of just using some overheads. are sennheiser e604's any good. or should i just get some more 57's?

Keep an eye on that "Behringer Thread" underneath this thread!

in context ive tried 3 mics. i use the sennheiser e604s. i tried the SM57s, they sound good, but its easier to work around e604s, and the 421s sound good as well, but even harder to work around, and they cost a lot. they all sound good, but for me, the 604s work great.

I guess it depends on the sound you want, but as a general rule of thumb: SM57s work well for the money, and although MD421s cost quite a bit more, I would choose them because they simply sound fantastic on toms.

I guess 421 is the standard answer these days. 57 works too.

I really like using condensors on toms (4050, Lomo, 147 work well depending on the kit and sound you want). You have to have a really good drummer for that though.

I've been using Shure AXS6 ... you don't hear much about them ... but I like how they work on toms.

At work(live sound) we use the 604s all the time because they are easy to setup and tear down in a hurry. Also they show up on tech riders alot more than 57's. I'm yet to try them in the studio. I may give them a try in a few weeks when we start recording the drums for a CD I'm working on. (Depends how many 57's I can come up with, small budget and the less we rent from the boss the better)

Most definately the Sennheiser 421s. The SM57 didn't sound too bad but the 421s blew them out in my opinion.

I've used the 604's and they are ok. SM57 is great provided you're willing to take the time to position it correctly to get a good consistent sound between the toms. The 421's are pretty damn good, but after using the Beyer M-201's I think they leave the 421's for dust

Go the M201

Believe it or don't, C-1000's sound pretty damn good to my ears on toms. C-3000 on floor tom was another sleeper. They're what I'm useing now.

What about this?

Anyone ever used ATM-63's on toms? From what I've heard from some other engineer friends, they sound like 57's but are much more directional and therefore cut a little more bleed from the other drums.

I borrowed a set to try on the last recording session I did... but the ones I borrowed were cheap pieces of junk...

The diaphram had been dislodged on two of them and had been glued back in place... the third mic didn't work at all.

Went back to my trusty 57's and recorded the project.

I do have ONE good find though... Audio Technica overhead choir mics (can't remember the models).... they are on long cords with a preamp body at the very end. I use the board phantom power, so I didn't need the pre in them, but hit the roll off switch on them and go to town. They are GREAT sounding overhead/hi-hat mics. I fell in love with these things over the C-1000's I had used before.

Now I've just got to see what Harvey finds with those Behringer mics.
