Just wondering what everyone's opinions are on acoustic amps. What's your favorite? I've heard some people just use Bass amps, what do you guys think?

I use my Roland JC120 with kick ass results. I also go through a Sansamp Acoustic DI. I play both steel and nylon string guitars in my set-up.

I've tried a few acoustic amps, but haven't been blown away by anything to replace the Roland and Sansamp. The Marshall Acoustic Soloist was a dissapointment. The Roland acoustic amp didn't sound too much different than my JC120. The Fender stuff is ok. Trace Acoustic is good stuff in small boxes. The Fishman is pretty cool.

Acoustic guitar amps

A lot of it depends on what kind of acoustic guitar you have, what kind of pre-amp or pickup you have and what kind of sound you want. I don't have the money to spend on an expensive amp right now, but I do have a nice Taylor small body acoustic/electric that I play through a Custom PA. It sounds pretty darn good. The Custom PA sells for $300 or, if you get them on sale, $200. I really like the purest acoustic sound I can get, so present setup still sounds a little too "electric". I used to have a little Trace acoustic amp and didn't like the sound of that at all, so traded it straight across for the Custom PA. Now, my Taylor sounds more like an acoustic, which is what I wanted in the first place. The Taylor amplified through a Marshall acoustic amp sounds really nice, (tried this out at a music store), but it is a lot of money. What kind of guitar do you have? Does it have a built in pre-amp or a sound hole pick-up?

I also have a Taylor w/ Fishman Prefix Plus. I am running it through a Fender Acoustasonic Jr. The guitar sounds great through the amp, that is, when the amp isn't buzzing. It isn't feedback, but something is going on and I'm not sure what the problem is. Actually, that problem's on another thread soooo....

Anyways, I've also played some lower end Crate amps and even those seem to sound pretty good. ANy thoughts on using a bass amp?

The Fenders are great. I am surprised that you didn't like the Trace, they are supposed to be top of the line. I had a Dean that I really liked the sound of, it just didn't get out enough for me. I have been stunned by the Carvin number, I beleive it is the AG1000, or something like that. It is pretty amazing for the price.

I've had great luck with the fenders as well. Before I had one, I used a small mixer plugged in to the effects return of a small crate amp. That actually gave me a good cheap acoustic combo.

I would thing that a bass amp would cut out a lot of the highs that are desirable in acoustic playing. What model Taylor do you have, anyway? Mine is the 712. Love it to pieces! My oldest son, (another guitar player) knows he will inherit it, so I always watch my back when he's around!

You know, Carvin's new catalog had a disclaimer on their smaller redeye combo amp for bass that said"a great high powered acoustic guitar amp." It really peaked my interest.

My dad bought one of those small, cheap Crate acoustic amps. I haven't really messed around with it. But seems ok for the guitar he's playing through it (cheap Takamine). Effects are ok. Good fun playing my Parker through it too.

California Blondes are awesome amps. I usually play mine through that. Give you a wide range of knobs to help find your specific sound. Bass amps are pretty cool also, I used to play through an old Fender Bass amp, just a real deep clean sound, add that in with a chorus pedal, and maybe a little envelope filter, and its a heavenly sound.
I once heard Dave Matthews started on a bass amp, I mean during his early times, does not matter too much I suppose. Considering now he plays through an entire wall of effects and mikes his guitar and mixes it with an amp and also, directly into the mains.

Oh well.

I saw that in the Carvin catalogue, too. Made me wonder what they were talking about. I mean, really ... a 600 watt acoustic guitar amp? Ten seconds of feedback and I'd be on a stretcher.

It seems to me that acoustic guitar amps work best when they are able to emulate a high fidelity PA. So, maybe a powered PA cab and a DI would give you the best sound. How about a Mackie SR450, a passive DI box (Carvin, $30) and a high end EQ? Look at the Raven units, particularly their True Blueparametric EQ that adds and subtracts the signal from itself:
