Fat Head

checking the spec the M-Audio Octane has 50db gain.

I'd say that's marginal and it's probably not the quietest of amps, especially when pushed.

For a loud guitar cab it'll be fine, but if micing an acoustic gtr it'll be pushing it.

another consideration is Pre Input impedance. Ribbons generally like a fairly high input impedance. the M-Audio Octane spec states 2.3K. this is pretty low. my AEA TRP is 18K. it'll work, it's that the pre will load the ribbon reducing gain a bit more.

I have been very pleased with my Fat Head (with Lundahl) on electric guitar cabs. It really growls in the midrange and adds great color and character. There is definitely a TON of low end from the thing, so you will probably end up rolling a lot off.

It's a ribbon, so it's not ideal if you're going for extreme clarity and detail. There is detail there, but it's smooth. If there's space for it in the mix, this is one of my favorite picks for guitar cab.

Here's some audio samples:

HEAVY TREM DIRTY GUITAR

Here's a vocal test with the Fat Head II. I think the only thing that's different about the II is the casing, but it effects the sound like everything else.

Old thread, but I have a Fathead II w/ Lundhaul transformer and its the best guitar amp mic I have ever used. So beautiful.
