Fantom X and DP4 and MIDI

I recently bought the new Roland Fantom 8X. I think that it is a wonderful synthesizer. I am at my wits end in my attempt to interface the unit with DP4 (mac with the MOTU 828MK2 or by the built in USB link).
Any suggestions?
Is MIDI-2 different than MIDI-1?
Are there any other users of the Fantom X who have had experience interfacing with the Mac and MIDI?
