I've always been fond of the Joe Walsh Funk #48 & 49 guitar sound. I use a small cranked up tube amp and add just enough compression to tighten it up. Also, an SM57 straight into the recorder. It's my go to sound. There is just so much you can do with it. Add some delay, wha, even some more distortion. Basically, i always go for sounds where the notes, harmonically speaking, are cooperating with each other. This is probably my most used tone recipe.

edit- and for the snooty, I ALWAYS sound like me.

Toni Iommi: Moderately stinky overdrive and a generous helping of midrange. My tone is similar I suppose, but the midrange isn't quite so raunchy.

Yeah guys....keep'em comin'.....that's the whole point of this discussion here, sharing in our tone visions, our brown sound theories. I knew oh so much there would be those guys sort of saying "I dont try to imitate other's sound, I got my tone and so on". And I respect that. I respect that as much as those who have fun covering...U2 for example, either because they simply have a "hard on" attaining the edge's sound, or because they have a genuine pleasure to play a U2 song as close as possible to the real thing.

Now watch out, here below, I'm getting philosophical here...oh-oh !

Playing guitar as far as I'm concerned is a nirvana of pleasure, building one's tone with his amp, cabs and fx is another nirvana of pleasure.

But to be honest, as I'm getting older (I'm 47) I play more and more my acoustics and my electrics are rather quiet. And I think that it's because:

1- simpler is better (a mantra that is gaining more and more trueness with age)
2- the more time goes, the more I love playing guitar and the least I enjoy wasting my precious guitar playin time tweaking buttons & switches.

One heck of a good thing that could have happened to me would have been for my 14 years old son to develop a passion for sound engineering. And he would have been like "Dad, let's go, just play the twinger and let me tweak your amp and your FX all the while, I'll make you a tone" ! ahahahahahaha.....a guitarist's heaven on earth !! ahahahaha....

It's just the opposite for me...I'm playing my electrics more and more and my acoustics just hang there silently, looking all jealous like! :D

Hey...I keep it simple, guitar --->tube amp...that's it.
I got a pile of stomps and whatnot, but most of the time I just plug in and play (maybe I'll use some reverb and a touch of delay), but I do a minimal amount of knob twiddlin'.
I just can't get any "tone" that hits you in the gut with an acoustic guitar.
An acoustic is good for playing around campfires. :)

sound comes from technique. How you play. Sometimes the guitar and amp make no difference
And don't be fooled. Some guitarists use different guitars in the studio, versus what the use live on stage.

RUSH sound, Alex Lifeson changed his amps so many times over the years.

However, there are FX processors, Digitech, Line 6, Zoom, Boss GT etc that have pre-sets and also forums that share patches.
Look into a setup that may have that versatility, learn how to play in various styles ... and number 1 ... have fun !!!

Hey Miroslav, cool, I like what youre bringing here (even if we're sort of startin another subject here) : electrics vs acoustics !

Yes, that makes me realize I'm more and nore into acoustics, most definitely. But I like your simplistic and efficient approach of guitar-tube amp. Personnally, I guess if I had Stevie Ray Vaughn chops I'd spend all my time on a single coil axe and a Fender Bassman, or a Princeton, kinda thing. For me there's also the whole $$ thing with amps. Being a dad of 2 teenagers, most of my money goes for them.

Acoustic guitars beside being simpler, easier to carry around, available anytime and self sufficient in terms of tone and volume, they operate some kind of magic on me. We were mentionning Jeff Beck, elsewhere in this thread and his unique sound no matter what. Well you should see the sound and the vibes I get from playing just about any acoustic guitars, be it a 800$ axe or a Wal-Mart 90$ guitar toy ! That's gotta be, most likely, because I deeply love the guitar as an instrument. I feel so good with that piece of wood in my hands.

There's something out of this world playing fantastic guitar songs (in my opinion) like "Hope", "Natural science"(Rush), or "Rain song", "Kashmir", "Friends", "No quarter" and "Gallows pole"(Led Zep) or "Train kept a rollin"(Aerosmith) just to name a few. And that's another thing....as soon as one start exploring alternate tunings and Nashville tuning on an acoustic, it's another world that opens up. And I havent touched the subject of starting jamming one's own stuff where I find inspiration to come easier on an acoustic.

The sound of an acoustic, played very dynamically, and muffing the lows, controlling the frequencies....wow !....I can produce some low end bass tone that literally massage your stomach upside down, it's crazy !

ahahahaha......Anyways, I love both electrics and acoustics, but I came to discover the surprising pleasures and magic of that simple piece of wood with strings attached. Plain and simple acoustic guitar.

Figure this out: On summer time, warm weather & beautiful day, I grab a cheap acoustic (cheap and travel size....sort of guitar for kids), tie that to my back (without even a case), climb on my big bore motorcycle and riding just about anywhere knowing I can stop anywhere and can start playin be it alongside of the road, in the woods by the lake and a campfire or atop the mountains. A bike, a guitar and optionnally paper and pen to compose songs. That's my thing !
;-)

I play my acoustics often, and I find that it improves my electric playing. However, if i haven't played my acoustics in a long time, i discover my overall technique suffers. Acoustic is the backbone of all great music.

As corny and cliche as it seems, it really is mostly in how you play.
I'm so shitty as a guitarist that even if you gave me the blow by blow low down on every guitarist's sounds and settings, I couldn't get there. But neither am I interested in doing so. I love lots of tones but I can't ever remember trying to sound like this guy or that guy. I was thinking about that with bass too. I was motivated to take it up by hearing Roger Waters on Pink Floyds' first two LPs and Keith Richards on "Street fighting man" (I thought it was Bill Wyman). But I've never been interested in sounding like anyone.
As far as the guitar goes, I've never done it the same way twice. In a way what Muttley said, plug guitar into amp (with variations of pedals sometimes) and go from there till I find I like the sound. I experiment wildly every which way to atone for my general crapadociousness.
Acoustic is the backbone of all great music.
I don't think I'd quite go that far. I do love acoustics though. Given the choice, I'd have both !

Answer this for me:

Why do you acoustic guys get so angry when someone mentions their dislike for acoustic guitars? Hell, even chili is getting in on it. What gives? It's just an opinion. If you hate electric guitars, I don't think anyone cares. Why get so offended and defensive?

I'm sorry, but this thread was boring from the outset and I shouldn't have even contributed. :o

I'd much rather do it than talk about it.

Look how mad he's getting.

It has nothing to do with acoustics. It's your overall attitude about almost everything you post. Useless and self righteous. You're a dork, hell bent on stirring shit. You love it, makes you feel good, because like i said, you are self righteous. There is one like you at every site, every job and every store. Not to mention, concerts, music stores etc. It doesn't take long for a person such as myself to realize not to take you seriously and eventually, completely ignore you. That's all.

I did point this out in #13. Really if the best chat round here is about sounding like someone else we've had it.
