Hi. Anyone who wants to comment on this feel free.

I am sick and tired of "big" bands who can not pull off a good live show.
My band works boody hard to get a good show together and it is rediculously difficult to get a look in in the industry.

I have noticed that in Australia people dont seem to judge bands by talent, if a band can tell an audience where to go then the audience thinks they've seen the best performance of their lives.

Is this the same anywhere else in the world? And how the hell can someone like me do anything to change it?
Cheers.
Grant.

It's the same all over the world. Big bands aren't big because they are good, or have good live-performances. They are big because of marketing... Not always, but mostly.

What you can do: settle for less. Alot of people do appreciate good live performances. Jazz is still good players, and hardly any image... You won't be able to make a living of it this way, most likely, but playing good concerts, and doing alot of shows will give you an audience and good respons. And if you haven't got a marketingengine behind you, you'll know that they really respect you for what you do, and that they don't applaud because they are brainwashed to like you.

Well. We have played almost every weekend over the last year, sometimes doing 2 or 3 shows in a weekend. Most of these gigs have been at the same place, do you think that is a good thing?
We have been thinking about cutting it back to 1 show per month to focus more on promotion and higher quality gigs, do you think this is a good Idea??

You do 2 to 3 shows a weekend at the same place? Oh boy. You mean your audience comes to see you each day of the weekend? Or does it differ each time?

I think you should do less shows at that place. About once a month. The audience will be less bored, and maybe you could ask a little more. And try to get gigs at different places, different people...

No, we play heaps of different places. can see bio at www.cavendishmusic.live.com.au
if you like. We try to move around venues as much as possible. We are waiting to complete our EP so we can start putting on our own shows, you know, so much better having something to promote as well as the band, rather than just the band.

Seems you're doing pretty ok? My band plays once every few months. But as from your site, it seems that your band has a bit more ambition. We just play for fun...

Keep playing different places, build experience, make sure you got enough songs that are strong as hell, record a few songs, your best, and use it to get more gigs, and maybe attention from a label. If you wanna get a labels attention, make sure you have enough songs, not to many. 15 really is the number. That's about all I know.

Your website looks alot like a marketingplace btw. :D Are you guys salesmanagers? Other managers? There are some managers amongst you, right? :D hehe.

I am very curious as to why you say it looks like a marketing place. Is that a good thing? As for the managers stuff, haha, Michael is very business minded, trying to get his studio career happening, um, graeme is trying to get his upholstery business up and running but that is about it.
Im stumped.

Just read!

Each musician comes from a rich musical history to finally present to you a marketable Cavendish
hehe...

And management: hehe, read this:
Cavendish's immediate goals are to expose our music live audiences and develop a strong band. As well as establishing a reputable name and a strong following which will enable us to draw large crowds to the venues we play. We also want to record a high quality EP and forge our mark on audiences in Brisbane and abroad.

I think you might qualify with some of the ISO standard about configuration management or something. hehe. :D

It really looks like a business related site. Not really the place for fans to come and see what's going on, just a place for organizers that want to book you. I dunno. Maybe it works. Maybe some more bandinfo, and send a demo to the organizers, get in touch with them personally instead of the site. I really haven't got a clue. Band 'management' :D isn't my thing...

I think it's great you really try as a band to manage the business site of it.

But Roel got's a point when he says it's sometimes a bit too obvious. I would remove the goals part of your bio, it isn't necessarry and it kinda makes potential fans believe your especially interested in the reputation stuff instead of the music.

Btw, about 'big bands'... I read a terrific story Tom Waits told his son when he asked : 'Daddy, why aren't you a REAL Rock Star'.
Waits replied: Once there was a forest with lots of trees. On a particular place there was a very big strong tree, who always laughed with a small ugly tree beside him. The big tree said he was much stronger, more pretty, and people admire him. A few weeks later there were suddenly people in the forest, and they cut down the big, strong tree to make furniture out of him, while the small tree remained in the beautiful forest for the rest of his days'

It's good to be ambitious, but don't take the rock star stuff to seriously. Many bands who are big one day don't mean shit the day after that and no one remembers them. When you make good music you enjoy, less people will maybe know you, but they'll remember you longer, and more important, you'll live a happier live.

Thanks for your thoughts guys. Bout the Bio, I guess at this point in our "career" all the website is really for is if we are talking to promoters on the phone and they have a gig lined up but need our bio straight away we can always point them to the website. Or if I talk to people like you guys and mention the band, sometimes they'll ask questions so I will just give them the link and they can find out themselves, see what we look like, hear our music if they want to. If it was set as a fans website I'd say I dont think we'd have the bio at all.

Rock start stuff, I dont want to be famous, I just want to live off my music, hopefully see the world while I'm doing it. Of course I want the band to be huge, everyone does, even if they dont admit it, but I want it to be huge because this is what I want my career to be, not to be famous.

The thing that puts me in the best mood is playing a great gig. Even if it is at a dive of a bar, but when the vibe is great and the audience gets right into it then nothing can replace that feeling you get. Im sure everyone knows what Im getting at here. I do it for love and hope for money but definately not for fame.

Australia? Then you're right next to heaven, Here I am in Indonesia, everything's upside down... I mean music industry. I didn't even see any "friend from same country" here in this forum...

bris buddy

I also am in a bris band and we have been together for 6 years now .I have played support for many of the top bands aust and lots of bands from o/s.one of the great things about playing with the ones that are crap is that you get to blow them of stage(no not that type of blow and no not the other type of blow)wich gives the punters a chance to see that you are indeed a band that work hard have what it takes and can deliver the goods.I think though that your band should get interstate a.s.a.p. because when you play with other bands from else where climbing their way up you can see alot of realy dedicated musos working just as hard as you.Since we started we have been to melbourne about 36 times/syd 29 /adelaide 8/western aust 3 as well as as far as longreach we work very hard and are going to japan in july but guess what we make no money and we like it like that were in it for music, the other 'top 'acts are in it for money and or fame wich is why they are a product and they more than likly belive their own press. also it might be that you dont like their stuff I know that I have seen more bands that I thought were crap than were good.I'm gonna try to make it to one of your shows and take a look, check ya.
