I have an Egnater 30 watt rebel head and cab Focusrite Saffire 6 USB and Logic Express. I have my amp connected to my interface through the line out and I keep getting this fake software sound from my guitar. Please let me know if you know there is anything I can change to get a better sound.

Thanks

Blake

Never connect an amp straight to an interface. Use a mic.

:laughings:

That's priceless!
Never heard it described that way...love it. :)

Yeah...stick a mic in front of the cab and then stick the mic into your interface. Cascade Fat Head II is my choice also.

Try adding reverb impulses to your "Fake guitar sound" it may sound a little better. IMO nothing beats a mic'd cab tho.

You also might want to try EQing the high end... a lot. But you should also use a mic on your amp.

Well I was trying to be lazy and it was late at night. I just got a Taylor T5 and I was wanting to record with it at like midnight so I could not mic it because of neighbors. How much does the Fat Head cost because I really do not want to waste any tone I get from the Taylor

A Taylor T5...???
So you are talking about an acoustic guitar not a solid-body electric.
Well you have to make a decision then...do you want to mic the guitar or plug it into an amp and then mic the amp...
...but taking an acoustic/electric, plugging it into an amp and then taking a line-out from the amp and into an interface is going to sound like total ass.
No surprise there.

The Fat Head is about $175...but now that we know you are not talking about a solid-body electric...it may not be the best choice for an acoustic/electric. Heck, since it's an acoustic/electric, if you really want to play it plugged in...then just use a DI setup and forget the amp.

I know this is going to sounds really stupid but what do you mean by DI?

Direct Input - i.e. plugging in directly.

What mics do you have?

T5 is an electric semi hollow body. It needs to be plugged into an amp. The amp needs to be miced. A Fathead will sound great with a T5 into an egnator. I use Fathead ribbons on all sorts of things including guitar amps, so it's super versatile. Another cheaper option is an SM57. It's a lot of people's go to mic for guitar cabs.

As a DI option, you'll need some kind of "dummy load" to plug the head into. You can't just plug a head into something that isn't pulling a load (i.e. an 8 ohm cab)...you can cause all kinds of damage. One way around this, and a way to make DI recordings sound better (not as good as micing the cab) is to use an attenuator like the weber 50w mini mass. It will simultate a 4, 8, or 16 ohm load and won't damage the head, and will make the recordings sound a lot better.

Di = Direct Inject. It's a line level matching box. Like a pre-amp for hooking guitars direct into mixers, soundcards, etc.

When I looked on-line yesterday...the T5 appeared more like a regular acoustic w/electronics, than a semi that needs the electronics to be heard. So does it sound ass w/out the electronics...???

To the OP...
If you need to use the electronics, then just miking the guitar will not work, but I still think you can try it w/amp and also w/DI and see what works better, and then the Fat Head may sound good with it if it's used with amp.
I just never tried the Fat Head on "acoustic" guitars...which is what I thought the T5 was.

With this type of guitar (T5)...you have to try out a few different approaches and find what works. It may not be as simple as just throwing up a mic in front of any old amp and plugging in. You have find what combination brings the best tones out of that acoustic/electric combination.
