Fake Asian sm57s

i wonder if people realize how many sm57s are hot. i saw a seller with a bunch on craigslist for $40 and thought about buying them, but somehow my morals took over when he emailed me back saying a band left them at his house and he didn't feel like shipping them back to them.

Perhaps they can offer it so cheap because of communism...

...just kidding. I sent a message to the seller asking why they sell so low. Even if it IS a knockoff... they picked the right mic to knock off!

I can think of a dozen mics that I'd rather have a good knockoff of than a 57.

We'd also have a ton of wanna-be recording engineers sporting their Neumanns. And that would be a whole lot more suspicious.

Please. There's no sense in valuing someone else's opinion when there may be a reason for that opinion to be formed. I doubt it would have been said otherwise. On that note, I'd like to point out from what I've read, that GLS microphones contain neodymium magnets which supposedly make for a higher output. Maybe that's why cubanorocker316 prefers the es57 to the sm57. And you can't blame him for thinking that a GLS mic sounds exactly like a Shure mic because that's how they're advertised. At that point, if it still bothers you that this false advertisement is getting around through your fellow forumites, then you may want to try emailing GLS Audio with your concerns.

i have a handfull of es57s and i think they're 100% worth it for the money.

Hi,dear friend,

this microphone is brand new, it directly comes from the shure factory.
the price is good, and also the quality is guaranteed (full two year warranty).

Thanks.

heheh... nice.

hi guys,

a few weeks ago i bought four mics from an australian guy

shure sm58
58 beta
57
57 beta

they all look totally REAL, opened them up to see if i could find any differences between my REAL ones and these,
all the paper work is included, says made in mexico,
mhhhhh, they might have faked everyting but

THE MICS SOUND AMAZING !!!

so no matter what i'm keeping them,
what i did notice is that in the paper work there is a little contest,
the contest ends in 2003, thats 3 years ago,
maybe this guy bought a huge overstock or something

i payed quite some money for shipment, but shipment was real fast and hell, it still was a supercheap deal !

so i do trust it

check this out. i got bored and started playing detective:

http://feedback.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=fengzhi_mic&iid=7397569308&frm=284

go check out the join dates of the buyers. MANY buyers joined on the same day. for example: mujin2005, sanweilingdu, aixiaoyu466, anxueli285, and overachel2005 all joined on Dec. 23, 2004.

also, take a look at the actual transactions of each buyer. i did'nt look at them all but all the ones i did look at had transactions that were too old to view. in other words, a bunch of fake transactions and a bunch of fake ebay members. oh, then look at the transactions between the buyers and other sellers. i wonder how they pulled that off? obviously someone is getting inside the ebay system.

better watch your ass on ebay!

Also, if you click on the feedback of most of his buyers (i.e. the fake ones), all but the top transaction has "no longer a registered user." It's like a deep nested chain of fake users on fake users to make it look like his buyers have good feedback too.

I actually "committed to buy" one of his mics prior to posting here, but hadn't paid for it yet. Upon hearing from you guys, I emailed him talking about the raised "S" on the Shure sticker, and basically how he's such a phony and I refuse to pay. There's been no reply and no negative feedback left. He would have seen my message, as he responded to another user here, and it is past my "buy" date. He knows that if he leaves negative feedback, I will respond with why I didn't buy it and expose him.

Why not buy 2 and re-sell them on E-Bay for US$70 per. You might be able to
turn in a nice, little profit.

it is quite surprising the efforts they make to make them look real then muck up on such easily fixed things like an incorrect logo or slightly wrong colour. Its like the fake watch industry. The watches produced are remarkably good. Think about how intricate the parts are inside of a breitling copy. Especially the ones without batteries. A lot of wasted talent on the makers behalf.

I couldn't live with myself.

I'll vouch for the GLS ES-57's. I've got a handful I like them as much if not more than the SM-57's I've got. They seem sturdier (never liked the rotating grill on the SM-57's) and have a higher output. They do NOT sound like the SM-57 though, subtle but immediately noticable difference. There's more high-end, less of the midrange "honk" of the SM-57, a little thinner in the low mids and slightly more solid bass. Not a bad difference at all, but if you're looking for exactly the SM-57 sound look elsewhere, but it is a good little mic in it's own right. Incidently mine all sound very consistent from one to the next, which is always something you worry about in cheaper mics.

I would be leery of one shot ebay promotions of the "real thng" but I have bought different kinds of cabling from www.speakerrepair.com which has a significant ebay presence and I have been very happy with their stuff. They have Shure knockoffs ( The GLS ES-57s? ) but disclose that fact. (They also hype the mics but who wouldn't - they're selling them). I've been thinking about springing for a set, but I'd try one or two first to see what they are like. They make no claims to be sellng a Shure mic.

an incorrect logo
Back in the day of bootleg LP's I think they made very tiny errors so they would who the bootlegger was.

Now he knows the SHURE logo is wrong he will probably change that for his next batch of mics.

He is also selling a beta 58 for 60AU? Its a fake. Dont buy it. I got suckered into buying a fake beta 57 for 75 bucks. ITS NOT WORTH IT!

A friend of mine had a fake Pink Floyd Ummagumma album. We were talking about the Floyds one day, and he said, "You know, I never understood why the two Side 2's of that Ummagumma album were the same." I said that they weren't, so he pulled out his copy to prove it, and sure enough, on his copy they were. Tiny error, indeed... ;^)

I have used them both

From what I've read about the es57, it's NOT the exact same thing. It definately does'nt look the same and from what I've heard from people that own them, they sound very similar but not exactly the same. How can you tell if the recordings sound better than an sm57? Did you hear the recordings done with the sm57 and es57?

Don't mean to bust your balls but there's no sense in saying things like this.
Still use them both - I like the ES-57 better than the SM-57. It's more linear and true to the source while having a nice response with decent off-axis rejection.

I don't find the same to be true with the ES-58 and the SM-58. I still use an ES-58 live, but I prefer SM-58's as they have a more pronounced (and musical) mid-freq bump. For the studio (and my personal gear) I dumped the Shure-type mics altogether in favor of Audix (OM-2's and 5's)...much better for vocals in my opinion (as well as MUCH better for off-axis sound rejection).

just my .02

Ok, so... is there any rich Aussie here on the board? One who dares to buy it, test it, and post the result here... :p

Come ooonn... :D

I contacted one of the buyers who has already paid for a few. He said he'd tell me what they are like when (if?) they arrive.
