Fading -new heavy ballad

Joey - very, very cool except for the squeaks - I'm in the can't cope zone with Greg - I know purists love them but they spoil the effect for me.
I've had some success tuning the De esser in the fishfillets suite (spit fish?) to the main freq - that & automatic the fader a fair bit.
The electric guitars are monsters - hot solo too.
I quite like the drums but then again I just program & OD with my TR505 so I have no taste at all - I rely on the generosity of folk like the terrifying texans & the crazy canadian to lay down superb tracks occasionally.

Yes, I'll be hitting the mix again this week, before I leave for a 2 week visit to Malta. Those squeaks have gotta go...
Using the bass amp with my VOX has really helped the guitar sound. The terrifying Texan has already helped me in some ways and the crazy canadian should hang around here more 'cos we need and value his advice....

I like it. As far as the string squeek, the only way to get rid of them is to retrack, using something like freteez on your fingers. Keep it, fuck it... it gives the song character.

As far as the song, it's got a flavor of Creed, AIC and some other grunge era bands mixed in, with great soloing to offset it.

Mix-wise, I'd say that you are getting better with every mix, Joe. Nice job on a good song.

The squeaks are near impossible to get rid of once they are recorded. I've tried hardware and software de-essers, automated EQ, automated narrow band compression, and it all just ends up sounding worse. We had horrible trouble with Elixir polyweb strings. The squeaks were unbearable. Then we tried some d'Addario strings and the squeaks are still there, just much more tolerable. You might try that. Also, some talc on your fingers can help cut down the squeaks. Nice job on the recording.

I've heard some good things over in the guitar forum about putting some talc on your strings.

The squeaks are pretty bad. I could see keeping them to some extent for the character they add, but right now their almost louder than the guitar parts! Good luck addressing those.

I agree with KCEarl on the vocals. Until you start belting it out towards the end, it sounds like you're having trouble finding a real melody. I mean, there are notes there, but they don't seem to have any real theme or focus.

The mix is quite good though. Greg_L's feedback is probably more constructive, but I thought the drums sounded good.
Other than the squeaks, the guitars sounded great.

The 12" bass speaker on the guitars has made them sound beefier, I really dig it. Gonna replay the acoustic part with the squeaks though.

It usually takes me about a week to finish a song, but that's only a couple of hours in the evening. Once the drums are programmed and the 4 guitar tracks laid down, it's plain sailing and I try to get the levels right as I go along, even if I push the faders down to zero before I start the proper mix. You get some routine in time....
I should have a new mix up later today, I've managed to record the acoustic parts without the squeaks.
