The truth is out there!
Ok, two questions,

1) what shape fade do you use for fade outs for a whole song? I've tried a few and nothing sounds right to me.

2) how long is a typical fade out...i'm listening to some on songs i like and they seem to fade out fairly quickly (like 5-7 seconds)...but using any of reaper's fade shapes it sounds weird.

maybe there is some trick i'm missing.

There's no set rule. Try to make all the songs that are going to be on one CD (if compiling them) the same. At a certain volume on certain players you really can't hear the music anymore, so instead of a straight line fade out, a curved one makes more sense (slow start, fast end).

I messed with it some more, and the one with the fastest ending sounded the best to me, so i applied that fade to all the tracks (in one song) and it sounds ok. I had to make the kick fade a little faster because it was standing out in the end.

I apply the fade to the final mix down, rather than to individual tracks (although I will automate the faders down to 0 on any tracks not needed at the end).

True I should wait. Reason i didn't…I didn't think to. Haha.
