Hi, I'm in the process of upgrading from my dreaded Audigy.

I've had my eye on the Firebox, but have heard complaints of it's mic pres. I was wondering if perhaps instead buying a cheap Audiophile card, and an external Studio Projects VTB-1 mic pre would yield better results (I only need 1 channel).

Both options would cost me approx the same. Would the converters on a Firebox be any better than those found on an Audiophile, and secondly, would the VTB-1 or DMP3 be better quality/more versatile/ or basically the same as the pres on the Firebox?

I guess what I'm really asking is, at a small budget, is it better to go for an all-in-one interface, or get some individual components. Again, considering I only need 1 channel. I'd be doing guitars - mic'ed amps, bit of DI, vocals & some midi.

Cheers
