External hard-drive for my recordings...

I have been checking out some external hard-drives, and it seems overwhelming in the final decision making. I need a USB, 7200 RPM one with preferably at least 80MBs, but 120 would be better. And I don't have an endless supply of money.!

I don't want to have to upgrade right away either.

Okay, I want it all........inexpensive with lots of MBs!!! :D

Buy cheap, buy twice.

Personally, I've been using a Glyph GT050 80Gb firewire drive. Fast and DEAD SILENT. I bought the rack ears too and have it in my rack.

Never regretted every penny I spent for it ($220).

Which is REALLY REASONABLE for a good hard drive. SCSI has priced itself into obsucrity so we should be happy to be able to get good drives at those prices. A 140 gig cheetah is a $1000 (!)

True, look at New Egg, or even Staples, or Office Depot. Got a store near you? Sometimes the prices are very competetive. Not always, but worth a check.
And the deal that Big is linking to, is a pretty cool deal. Check it out.

You should use firewire and not USB though. Just my 2 cents.
 
You get more bandwidth through firewire...

Bandwidth is more info traveling down that cable at a time...

USB is narrower...

Picture a 2 lane highway. You can only get so many cars down it at the same time in this case two. Now picture a 8 lane highway... Get it?

Uhhhhh...no Willz, I can not picture the difference between a 2 LANE AND 8 Lane HIGH-way..... :D :p

Hard drives are commodities these days, and the hard drives in those external enclosures are exactly the same as the ones inside your computer. The only thing to keep in mind is whether the drive is PATA (older technology) or SATA.

That's why I like to buy ONE USB external HD enclosure; then, as you fill up hard drives, you can just take the previous drive out of the enclosure and pop the new one in. All you need is a screwdriver.

The main brands are Western Digital, Maxtor, Seagate, Samsung, and Hitachi. They're all okay. Buy whatever's cheap! Go to Microcenter on Metcalf [or another store - I try to avoid CompUSA, Best Buy, and Circuit City, though] and look around. They have some pretty good deals, and you're out the door with what you want.

Up to about 250 GB, the capacity per dollar increases.

As for USB versus Firewire: If you're actually recording TO the hard drive, speed matters, and you'll get the best performance with the internal drives in your computer. If you just need the extra storage, USB will do just fine.
 
They actually make enclosures where you can swap out the hard drive in them. Pretty sweet, and a great solution if you go through a lot of hard drives.

High Quality, Hi Res files: You need the Autobauhn

Anything else: Congested highways of LA is alright.

we are talking Missouri. Our highways would be the equivilant to a scsi cable that has been chewed on by a shark.
