we are talking Missouri. Our highways would be the equivilant to a scsi cable that has been chewed on by a shark.

those sharks do get around!

You get more bandwidth through firewire...

Bandwidth is more info traveling down that cable at a time...

USB is narrower...

Picture a 2 lane highway. You can only get so many cars down it at the same time in this case two. Now picture a 8 lane highway... Get it?

Im not too up to date on the fastest cables but i thought usb 2.0 was faster than firewire?

It's theoretical throughput is a bit faster....400m for firewire, and 480 for usb2. But I think firewire runs "cleaner" if you will. Kind of the "in theory" vs "real world" speeds. But, either one should work fine, for most of us.

I can get 96+ tracks at 24/48 through a USB2.0 connection before having problems with dropouts.

I've heard that firewire is generally prefered over USB because USB uses more CPU resources.

My external for my portable setup is a 320GB WD Caviar (I think it's even IDE or ATA), Metal Gear Box, mounted in a swap tray. The computer is an ASUS notebook. I haven't done a full, large scale project with the setup yet though.
