I have been noticing more and more that I have computer noise, mainly the high pitched squeal but some other noise coming through my reference monitors.

I have KRK Rokit 8's, they are powered.
The audio interface I'm using is an Aardvark Q10
I am running mono-analog out straight to the monitors...

I can't figure out why I'm getting that noise. When I turn off the monitors, I can hear it coming from my computer, don't even get me started about the external hard drive.

I read in an earlier thread that a flat panel monitor my have something to do with it... but if that's the case, how do i solve it. as many ideas as possible is appreciated.

thanks.

my wharfies were hissing a bit but ive since fixed the problem by using good quality balanced cable from my q10 to my monitors. this especially helped because i have a frikking huge crt monitor which will really add noise into your signal. lcd monitors are supposed to not interfere or at least as much.

what kind of cables are you connecting them with? im using balanced TRS to XLR and my speakers are very quiet.

i'm stupid

ok, i'm stupid... i reread your post, from the context they're clearly speakers... my bad.

anyway, i'll get cables and try again... all i was/am using for cables is standard instrument cables that i was using for pro audio from my power amp to my mixer... they were short and did the trick, so i will try something different.

thanks, i'll post my success/failure.

brand of cables

what brand cable are you using? are all trs-xlr's balanced by definition or not? because looking for some cables online, I saw a large discrepency in price... whereas six of them can cost 29.00 usd, i found one hosa cable costs 21.00.

what do you make of this?

yeah 'wharfies' are the wharfedale 8.2a monitors that i have.

trs and xlr are balanced cables. im just using peavey cables... i think they normally run like $15-20. if you are just using instrument cables... those are unbalanced and could very well be the cause of your problem. i know that upgrading to balanced cables really helped in my situation.

here is an example of cable that is balanced... its really cheap though--i bet this isnt exactly the highest quality out there: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=rec/search/detail/base_pid/336971/

here is mogami cable that is very high quality and much more expensive:

hope this helps.....

I had a similar problem with my laptop and my rokits. To fix it, I did two things:

1. (This only applies if you have a mac):download apple's CHUD tools. In the processor prefs, uncheck "Nap". That will get rid of your squeal.

2. If you are using a firewire interface, try to get your power from the DC rather than from the firewire BUS. This got rid of most of my noise.

Hope this helps.
