Express 8

I am thinking about picking up Cakewalk Express 8. The price is very right.

I need light system requirements because my dedicated music PC is a 200Mhz with 32 megs of ram running (and this is important) Windows 95b.

I have software running on this computer that won't run in 98 or higher, so for the sake of these programs, I have to use software that will run in 95. Express will do that.

So, is Express 8 any good?

Probably just as good as Win 95.


Sorry, couldn't resist. I've never used Express, so I have no clue whether it's any good.

I think any Cakewalk higher than Pro Audio 6.02 will do *relatively* good for MIDI and basic Audio stuff. It's great if you do MIDI only with external devices. But don't expect that much... Just don't expect that much... FYI, I'm still using Cakewalk Profesional 3 for Win3.1 in my XP Home machine for basic MIDI sequencing beside Sonar 3 PE. Easier to control, you know...

Well it just so happens that my intention IS to use it purely for MIDI.

I'm currently using PG Powertracks for the job, but I'm not completely happy with it.

Using a MOTO Express XT I controll all of my modules, drum machines and synths. I record the results from stereo outs straight to my four track digital stand alone.

If I wish I could add vocals or guitar by bouncing tracks around or just shred them to the remaining two tracks and just mixdown.

Is Cakewalk Express better suited for this purpose than Power Tracks?

As long the control surface sends and recieve control messages, it should. But don't expect native support...

No to mention the above mentioned system could never handle softsynths on its own either.

Can you give me an idea of your experiences with Cakewalk Express?

I didn't actualy use it. My brother had it bundled with soundcard he bought years ago. It doesn't play VST, nor DXi. Only support Windows' MME native driver. Limited recording audio only two track at once. Limited plugin per track. No MIDI sys exclusive. etc. etc. (I'm probably wrong )... Anyway... I can only say it's good for musical schetch pad back then. One more thing is go check the price. I think it shouldn't higher than $15 by now... Good luck

I only expect to spend around $15.

My main use for it really is as stated above. Going to use it as a sequencer (it's primary function as I understand it).

However, it would have been nice to experiment with some of the plug ins that can be downloaded for free these days. Oh well.
