Two Words

Hi Rockstar...
There are two operative words here. The first one is "experimental". the second "music" To simplify, experimental simply suggests an attitude of "what if I do this or that. ?? What woould happen??? The second term is "music". To get to any useable discussion one will have to define music, which will be broadly defined by "whatever you have already heard." In order to get "experimental" in any meaningful way a guy will have to listen to an awful lot of stuff thats already been done to find out where lie the limits. Limits is a poor choice of word here, for as S.P Funbath was fond of saying, "There are NO limits!!!
To refer back to my difinition of "experimental" ( What if I....) the point to be grasped is this . If "I" do this, the result will be different from waht will happen if "YOU" do it. Get what I mean. So get into it and learn to dig it.

i guess what i have to remember is when i was taught last year about experimental music in my high school theory class, it was experimental. but now it's been done, so i have to do it differently than that. im starting to get it now. i dig it.

Expirimental: Noise

I agree with the previous posts. Defining "experimental" eventually becomes an exercise in semantics.

For my two cents, I went to a "noise art" show last week. this consisted of a guy named howie, who ran a old tape deck, a cd, and a some other electronic gadets into a four track, and mixed together tape squeals and feedback.

The second gal came on stage with two two fx pedals, and did some interesting stuff. Lastly was one of the dudes from sonic youth who was also odd noise stuff.

It was atonal, no tempo, etc. For my defintion, that's experimental.
Not exactly relaxation music, BUT very interesting, kind of a break out from all the regular stuff, kind of a ear pallette cleanser.
I highly recomend the experience it for any real music listener.

check out Emergency Broadcast Networks album from 96. i saw a promo on it on Launch Issue 2, from the same year.

You might want to find out about two peices - "Lions are Growing" and "I am sitting in a Room". These are experimental and use the human voice as a starting point. Still, it might be a good way for you to find out more about the vanguard of experimental music

If you can find any of it, look for

Tontos Expanding Head Band, lots of experimental stuff with the human voice.
