IMO, there is a far greater difference between cheap and expensive amps than there is between cheap and expensive guitars.

I agree, and of course we are talking about electric guits here, because the same is not true with acou guits.

I find the my little korg modeler great for quickly jottting down ideas with a usable result. Plug and play witout any mics or too much futzing around. However it does'nt come anywhere near my Jazz Chorus in responsiveness or organic sound.

Cheap is relative. I have a Lafayette kit amp that I bought at a thrift store for ten bucks and it sounds awesome, just that one sound but sweet none the less.

I think even the cheapest amp wil have some positive aspect to it or at least one usable sound but for your all purpose go to amp your probably gonna have to spend a few bucks.

I have a Cyber Twin and a '66 Super Reverb. While the twin has great flexibiltyt and ok effects, nothing can compare (or replicate) the tone of that super. I use a blues jr. for smaller venues and church work but that super sound is nowhere else to be found.

The thread I posted about the preference of vintage over modern gear relates a lot to this thread. I don't think any amp modeler can duplicate the old jazz and blues tones used in the 40's 50's and 60's. For that you need to get yourself a vintage amp. The modelers sound like they are poorl imitating something when you try to get that sort of tone out of them.

Fortunatly for me, I don't have a need for that tone. But I do see how someone would want that.

My vote goes for - you get what you pay for. Cheap is "good enough", if you can tolerate your sound being just "good enough." But then you also need to look out for the overpriced brands too. In my opinion, no amp on earth is as overrated as Marshall. I've heard several CHEAPER amps sound superior. But it all depends on what you like to hear. In general, the quality of the sound goes up along with the price tag.

marshalls are definitely overrated as far as the solidstate ones go, the tube ones I dont think theyre overrated just overpriced. The solidstate marshalls have been accountable for the worst guitar sounds I've ever heard by far. I'd take any amp before a solidstate marshall, even something that costs 1/4 of the price of the marshall.

The main thing is to find what makes YOU play and sound better TO YOU. For me, I've been through a boatload of amps and guitars, and am now buying custom stuff. My amps come from Andy Fuchs, and I buy guitars from some private luthiers. That said, I still have my tweed Blues Jr.(too cool to get rid of :) ) and my Strat, Tele, Les Paul, and PRS guitars. I've tried many different modelers, and for recording scratch tracks they work OK, but I have since bought a Mesa Boogie V-Twin, and a Koch Pedaltone to have direct TUBE recording. I just don't think that a modeler will ever get the feel, responsiveness, and sag of a tube right. Just my $.02 ;)
