Expanding Recorder

Right now I am using a Fostex MR-8, its a small eight track digital recorder. I like it, but it can only record two tracks at a time. I want to be able to record about 8. What can I do to expand my recorder? Can I hook my mics into a mixer, then send it to one of the tracks on my recorder? If I use a mixer, will it plug in to my digital recorder without and separate equipment? Any other suggestions on what I could do?

hey
yes, if you want to record more things into 2 channles you could go something like

8 Mics (Drums) >> Mixers (Stereo Out) >> Channels 1 and 2 in the fostex

this way you get more tracks in stereo

this way you can record more than 1 thing in 1 (mono) or 2 (stereo) tracks

Thanks, but can I plug a mixer straight into my digital recorder?

Like Outboard signal processing gear?

What is outboard signal processing?

Would I need it to hook the mixer into my recorder?

I'm looking at either the Yamaha MG16/4 or the Yamaha MG16/6FX, whats the advantage to the MG16/6FX?
Do I need it?

I was in a similar situation and I found that I was tied to the number of inputs on my digital recorder (in your case 2).

If you're happy to set levels beforehand and record everything live it's doable.

You could hook a mixer up to your recorder but as memogtr describes you'd have to record directly into your two available inputs (or one for mono).

This would mean mixing as you recorded and you wouldn't be able to send individual tracks back to individual channels of the mixer. In other words you couldn't do overdubs.

Outboard processors are anything that processes the signal and lies outside of your recorder (compressors, reverb etc.). These aren't needed to connect recorder to mixer.

I think this is correct although I'm not familiar with the machine you use

Hope this helps
