Ok, me and my buddy are starting a band, and me and him are going to record everything ourselfs. Kind of a NIN, Filter type thing. Anyways... here's a un-detailed list of all the gear we have now:

- (1) Keyboard
- (1) Electric Guitar with Amp
- (1) Acoustic/Electric Guitar with Amp
- (1) Electric Bass with Amp
- (1) 4-Peice Drums set w/ 4 Cymbals
- (6) Microphones
- (1) HP Computer w/ windows 2000 and a CD Burner

Stuff I know I need:

- Recording Software
- Soundcard
- Monitors aka Speakers

Can anyone help me with other things i'm gonna need. I know couple things slipped my mind...

4 essentials you forgot... (indispensible reference material - you got the gear, so now what do you do with it???)

Behind The Glass - Howard Massey
Modern Recording Techniques - Huber & Runstein
The Mixing Engineer's Handlbook - Bobby Owsinski
Total Recording - Dave Moulton

I agree.
As for the the other gear, whats you budget? Do you want to mix with a mouse? Do you have a mixer?

hmmm depending on what sort of NIN style music you are doing i would say you need more of the synth stuff, sound like you are into your standard guitar based thing (+keyboard, what keyboard?) could be wrong. ive been making industrial music for a while and at times it verges on NIN in my more tuneful moments. i would say NIN has more synth than live but hey whatever your take on it you want. deciede that first and then work out the gear, cause they are worlds apart...
live needs mixer, mics, amps, space, forgiving neighbours.
synth needs synth, programming, time, synth gear.
it takes a while to get into either so if you just starting (?) dont expect it to be very easy or anything, especially if you fancy yourselves as the next NIN cause that is something special, not many people have that sort of talent. i cannot stand filter (excluding maybe hey man nice shot) it sound like it is just copying NIN, patrick just doesnt have the reznor thing.

but hey tell me(and the others) what you want to do more specifically and im sure you'll get a more substantial reply.

'luck

TRIP LIKE I DO totally ROCKS, though it isn't really FILTER...but still rocks as hard as anything trent has done.....i hope the next NINs will be more guitar driven...........two guitars and a well recorded trash can.

Filter is totally different than NIN, Filter is a lot more rock. And I like Richard Patrick for leaving NIN and starting his own thing.

Anyways... we're not setting out to be the next NIN, but what I meant is that we're doing it all ourselfs. Know what i mean? Cuz NIN is Trent Reznor, and Filter is Richard Patrick.

I was looking at the Aardvark Aark 20/20+ to hook up to my computer. And i'm planning on mixing with my mouse through the computer, but I need software. Any suggestions?

I also picked up a pair Roland DS-90 Monitors.

And I should have been more specific about my keyboard, i have a roland XP-30 Synth keyboard.

If that hallowed day of pixie reunion ever comes, mankind will know that equalibrium has been reestablihed in the force!

I for one will be hiding in a well insulated refrigerator with stereo microwave ovens blasting away on the "large sandwich" setting!

Can't get me like ya did the gingerbreadman!;)

BTW - I don't know who's moderating this thread, but how many more times is this kid gonna say "Bump" before someone says "Enough is enough!"?:D

The Aark 20/20 has pres or not?
What mics, or are you still shopping?
How many tracks are you looking to do at a time?
How is this HP setup?
Maybe I missed....have you got some kind of amp for playback?
All your FX to be software generated?

Help these guys help you with a little more detail.
Bruce is right about the reference material. He's a real engineer and will be serious help when you get to the knob twistin' stage.

I'm such a kiss ass!:D
