i'm interested in home recording on my laptop (macbook), but i have no idea where to start. so basically i guess i need to know a little bit of everything (hardware? software?). could somebody point me in the right direction?

MacBook, eh? Before purchasing anything else, I'd open up GarageBand and record something with the MacBook's internal microphone.

The sound quality isn't half bad, and you'll get some experience with tracking and sequencing.

Then move on to playing with VSTs (can GarageBand use VSTs?), loops, and notation.

+1 on the garage band program already on your mac. It's actually a very good powerful program that rivals many programs that cost several hundred dollars. If you're not happy with the computer's mic, which is likely, you can get a snoball USB mic that allows you to record directly into garage band for only $99. Nothing else needed. We did an entire CD with this set up at first. Now using CD sales $$ to upgrade equipment (better mics, pres, interface, monitors, etc.).

garageband can't use vsts... i think it's just audio units (AU)
