I had lots of great feedback on the initial version of this song.

I spent a few days working on the drums/keys/bass tracks I laid down on my keyboard (in Cakewalk).

Today I went to the basement and re-recorded the whole thing.

Hopefully I've incorporated all the advice you've been so kind to give me....

The song is called Everything I Am and this link should take you right to the song page:

I would really appreciate your feedback on this latest version.

:) :D :) :D

IDO,
This is a great song!
I know this will sound crazy BUT... the bass line is too locked onto the rhythm guitar! This might be a matter of EQ rather than timing. The root note of the chord seems to mesh too well with the (keyboard?) bass notes.
Maybe a little of the Timothy fix - pull some bottom end out of the bass & kick it up a little at 3K?
The drum track sounds fine though might need a little more panning for the cymbals.
Nice lead tones & the vocals are smooth.
This reminds me of Wonderful Tonight by Clapton - in the gentleness & unabashed affection of the delivery - nothing derivative or anything.
Cool stuff.

Don't think I heard the other version, but this is very well done. Very smooth. Great melody and I really like the vibrato in your voice.

I like the way you worked in little bluesy riffs at every opportunity in between and around the vocals.

One thing...I keep thinking I hear one solitary bongo right between 3:26 and 3:27, Did that really happen or was it just an auditory hallucination? Not a problem obviously, just kind of odd...

This is a cool tune...I could easily hear this on the radio. I think the mix, eq, instrumentation, etc. all fit the mood of the song.

I heard a couple of things though that I wanted to bring up. At 2:10 and around 3:19 or so, there is some sort of blip on the bass gtr which could be a punch in or a beat out of rhythm. The one at 2:10 was pretty obvious and 3:19 could have been my imagination.

Also, the cymbol crashes during the final seconds of the song. They really stand out compared to the rest of what's going on in the rest of the song.

Good work,

Brad

Hi ido, I really liked this song the first time around, and I like it even more now. The guitars sound great, and are mixed very nicely. My only nit is that I might want to hear the keys a bit more, but that's just an opinion thing. It sounds great just like it is!

Vocals are sweet, and the performances all around are spot on. Backing vocals sit perfectly in the mix. In general the mix breathes really well. Not exactly sure what that means, but I know it when I hear it. :)

Great job bro'!

Chris

Excellent job man...that sounds really nice. Vocals are extremely well done. I turned it up pretty loud, and like how it sounds. Seems well mixed to me. Nice tune man.

Ray - I guess I followed the bass a bit too closely on this take with the rhythm guitars. ;) The bass is midi keyboard bass. When I get some real bass recorded it should solve that issue. I'll look at the eq too to see what I can do on this version. Thanks for listening and as always, the great mixing advice.

heatmiser - thanks for checking it out and for the positive comments. Timothy Lawler and Gorty urged me to add those little licks and I try to include them more often. They do help to fill out the mix. I'll check out that solitary bongo you mentioned - it may be a midi edit because Boo Radley mentioned something around the same time.

Boo Radley - I could really use the royalties from this playing on the radio too - thanks for the compliment :D I'll check out those blips - they are probably edits that I missed. I spent several hours fighting with those - not sure why you get those midi blips but they sure are a pain to repair.

bigmahon - thanks Chris - I agree this version is a bit better than the last with the addition of the keys/bass/drums. I tried a different lead guitar but went back to my strat but with a bit different mic placement this time. I pulled up the organ on the midi settings but was worried it might be too loud. It's definitely too loud on my PC soundcard - not sure why it differs from PC to keyboard. Mixed down with a little more threshold - after Tim's feedback about compressors... I get a lot of great suggestions from this forum. Thanks again....

Dogman - thanks for listening and the kind words. I'm glad you can crank this and it still holds up okay. :D

:D :) :D :)

Very nicely done Gerry, the guitar fills throughout it are very tasteful and vocals and backing vocals all great. I missed the first version but this seems like a winner to me! Lyrics are very good also.

Your songs are great, man. And your lyrics are the cherry on top. Anyone really listening to what you're saying will get choked up. Your love songs are always way deeper than your average forgetful love song. It's obvious nobody writes this for you...This is YOUR song all the way.

I love the mix, no nits from me. Maybe a slightly brighter guitar, at least in the solo. Maybe not, I'm just searching....I like everything.

Great stuff Ido.

Same here ido
Well done!

Very nice. The keyboard stuff is just right, it doesnt stick out and adds texture. You even threw in drum fills/ :D  Excellent song, well done.

I really like this song, and I absolutely love the bluesish guitar riffs at the beginning and everywhere in between.
Drop it off at your local radio station and see what happens

Mike

I played the MP3 & played it louder It all fits together even better.
Your voice sounds gentler & beautifully supported by the b/vox.
The 1st cymbal fill seems to have an odd touch on the 1st hit - is this just me? It's on the 2nd fill too - like the wrong kind of metal???
I reckon you could put a little more sting in the lead lick going to the modulation just to draw the ear along with the change.
I bet this sounds great acappella.

All I can suggest is the tweak to the bass - OR Mike on the Rickie &, for the sake of it, run a tiny little bit of BBE sonicmaximiser over the whole mix.

This is a wonderful piece Gerry.

Anfontan - Thanks Tony - appreciate the listen and the kind words.... :)

Rami - I'm glad the emotion comes through, and it's memorable. That's my goal. Can't ask for much more in a song, really. Thanks man...

sikter - Thanks for the listen, glad you liked it! :)

DavidK - Thanks for checking it out. I'm working on the keyboard stuff, baby steps.... I remembered the fills this time....lol... :D

Nightfire - Thank you - the riffs were rec'd by Tim and Gorty and they do seem to enhance the overall tune...Now if I could only play like them... :D

Rayc - Fill courtesy of the Yammy - it has some cymbal bell thingy incorporated in it. Hope to get Mike on Ricky soon but he's busy with work and moving which I'm assisting with. Soon I hope..... I made a new copy of Pygmy Beat on a fresh CD, so I can play it in my truck again - enjoying it on my drive to and from....

:D :) :D :)

Nice tune ido. I particularly like the backing vocals. On headphones the mix sounds virtually radio ready. Everything's in the sweet spot, I can't fault it. Nice job

Sounds really great Ido. No nits from me. If I had to be super-picky, I think the snare sounds a little flat, but thats really reaching for something. Overall its very very well done. good job. :)

Bulls Hit and Greg_L - thanks for checking it out guys...glad you liked it.... :)

ido1957, great tune man. sounds very classic, timeless. i love the guitar playing (and tone) and vocals on this. my only nitpick is a little too much compression on the snare.

really nice job man.

Just a great listen Ido, really puts you in a good mood. So smooth and relaxed :) The vox are spot on and the blues guitar tones are a real nice touch. The only thing I could think of to improve on this is to record a real bass track. There's just something about it that I could tell before I even read it was a midi bass. Still sounds great though, great tune, great listen :D :D
