Everyone: what do YOU use Cakewalk/Sonar to do??

Please, share your example. I would much rather hear it than someone akwardly banging on a Yamaha Portashit, no timing whatsover, playing crappy presets with electronic drum sounds that went out of style in the mid-eighties.

Kitten, before you go bitchin about how evil the Piano roll is to a bunch of people who actually know how to make recordings, I suggest you Mosey over to the mp3 clinic and listen to some of our music. While your there, why dont you post your tune as well, you well get a lot of colorful comments.

BTW I played this at the speed you hear it. I made one mistake in the piano track and didn't even correct it it was so small.

I thought I would let everyone see my other side, since I am usually very calm and collected. I guess it was the fact that I have done many collabs with members here, including you and Alchuck, and know that we have wonderful players here who make swell recordings:) The "picture it please" was like a schoolmarm talking to 4 year olds. And when I heard the Mp3, well..... Ok, I will be my nice self again. No Comment.:)

Gotta go back to the Piano roll now, must "enter" violin notes...

Are you entering violin notes in PRV cos you are fed up playing "normally", you know, with style, poise and 30 odd years experience at the top flight?

Well, I was feeling mean today, but now I am in a good mood. Good to be seeing you, my friend, we should do another tune together:cool: I am back to playing again, got several Projects with HR people happening. If you have a chance, check out my Stravinsky recording in the mp3 clinic.

I use Sonar in a lot of ways.

I just bought a complete electronic drums set, 8 Dauz pads, the entire rack to hold them, roland r-8 drum machine, MidiKiti control voltage to midi converter, Boss footswitch, even a pair of drum sticks and a drummers chair! All for, get this, $50.00 !!!
And it works great! Can't wait to hook it up to Sonar!

Everyone, this is the guy who introduced me to the joys of soundfonts...it was an enlightning experience:)

I never, ever use quantize. Makes things sound too mechanical. I am careful about the timing of the drum track, but I never use the quantize command ever. EVER.

I dont' think you win anything by going that way.

I do click in my notes in the Piano Roll View, exactly like data. Just like I write sheet music just like data. In fact, data is just as good a way to describe musical notes as any other theory I've heard. I am not a keyboard player. I'd love to be one, but I'm not. So, when I create a song that has strings, pianos, or whatever else synth that I can think of, I don't throw it out because I can't do it the "real" way. I go into piano roll and create it, note by loving note. Then I pick a soundfont or synthtone and make it sound just like the music in my head. I accompany this with fake drums(because, alas, I am not a drummer either) and then I add real guitar, bass and vocals. When I play my music for other music fans, I have yet to have one of them ask me how I created the synth parts... or even the drum parts... in fact, the only time anyone mentions anything about the quality of the musicianship would be when it's a rough take and I've botched a guitar part.

So, basically what I'm saying is that it's a great thing that you have the skills to play the keyboard, but in the realm of recording it doesn't really matter. All that matters is the end result, not how you got there.

I read your web page bio - most impressive! I am definitely eager to hear some of your recordings. I play violin too - alas I'm not as traveled as you are but I'm a life-long trained player and did find a good ammount of work in Nashville for the past 5 years. I'm back in Kansas City now (started a family and this is where I grew up..blah blah...it was a TOUGH decision to leave TN) Anyway, I don't often see other violin folk on the boards. What setup do you use to record yourself? Any cool tips?

Oh yea....the post topic (I didn't forget)

Well....lets see...I use Sonar for tracking audio and MIDI. I then tweak things in Sound Forge and goof around with ACID - which I still like to mix in. Whatever gets it done I guess.

I've learned MUCH from this board - Thanks!
 
James Argo, thanks for the kind remarks on Drovers Hill, looks like we'll be having some more stuff to listen to later this year, providing David and I can get our creative juices going.

NobleSavage, good post, music is music, however we get to where we are going. Its the end result that counts, you are quite right.
