Have you ever had a piece of gear for some reason or another you let go, only to find out later, maybe even years, that you really realize that you should have kept it?
Over the years of recording I have acquired equipment, and like most people, I started off with crappy, sub par stuff, upgrading it as my skills improved. Looking back there have been a few things I kind of wish I had not parted with, but at the time, getting rid of them seemed like the thing to do in order to get something that looked better, “the grass is greener” type of thing.
There are a few things I have went back at repurchased because I really like their usefulness. This list includes: a Shure Beta 87, Boss SE-50, and a Mackie LM3204.
At one point in time I have had better Mic pres and mixers than what I am using now. A while back I down graded my board w/mic pres, to a board that was more reliable and more features but has less sound quality. I am in the process of upgrading my board and mic pres. As I think of what I have to spend to get something better than what I have, I look back at ONCE had, and sometimes wish I had not parted with some of the equipment.
The bright side is that I now know what quality I want to attain. Even though I had parted with some nice gear, I know the next evolution of my studio setup will be one that I will not change for a very long time.
(Unless I produce a VERY BIG HIT.)
