Have you ever had a piece of gear for some reason or another you let go, only to find out later, maybe even years, that you really realize that you should have kept it?

Over the years of recording I have acquired equipment, and like most people, I started off with crappy, sub par stuff, upgrading it as my skills improved. Looking back there have been a few things I kind of wish I had not parted with, but at the time, getting rid of them seemed like the thing to do in order to get something that looked better, “the grass is greener” type of thing.

There are a few things I have went back at repurchased because I really like their usefulness. This list includes: a Shure Beta 87, Boss SE-50, and a Mackie LM3204.

At one point in time I have had better Mic pres and mixers than what I am using now. A while back I down graded my board w/mic pres, to a board that was more reliable and more features but has less sound quality. I am in the process of upgrading my board and mic pres. As I think of what I have to spend to get something better than what I have, I look back at ONCE had, and sometimes wish I had not parted with some of the equipment.

The bright side is that I now know what quality I want to attain. Even though I had parted with some nice gear, I know the next evolution of my studio setup will be one that I will not change for a very long time.

(Unless I produce a VERY BIG HIT.)

Should have never gave away my Audio Buddy. :(

No but I shouldn't have sold my MSH-1A mic that was a damn good mic. At least I have the MSH-1M, which I've recently discovered seems just as good.

1972 Blonde natural Gibson Les Paul....traded for some "new" piece of shit, around 78. All I had to do looking back was change some rusty hardware and it'd been like new.

er...and that Fender Bandmaster Tube amp that was from the "used" pile, that had the tan tolex painted black to look "new"....no one wanted that old crap in those days

(now worth $1,000's!)

The Boss SE-50 rocks!! I got one years ago, and still use it.

My big thing was an Eventide H3000, which I sold before I had a clue how much ass it kicked.

There's a few pieces I got rid of that I later regretted. The first that come to mind are the Korg DL-8000R and AM-8000R. They are so rare that I haven't really had the chance to get them back, and I'm still kicking myself over getting rid of them. Plus, I keep gear in such good shape that should I buy one again it will never be in as good shape as the one I sold.

I also kind of regret selling my Yamaha ProR3 reverb box.

I had a Supro guitar and tube amp in high school that I sold because they weren't nearly metal enough...idiot!!! :o

A guy I knew who did ham radio told me the other guys he talked to made fun of his sound quality, so I lent him my SM7, and I never asked for it back :o

Well well well. Look who has decided to make an appearance! :p :D

Time.....I quit playing back in '90.....took it back up in '04.....can't get that 14 years back............ :o

My first good board was a Hill. It sounded great. The phantom power on it was a bit weird. I got rid of it when I got my MOTU 2408. I went with a couple of Korg digital mixers so that I could use all 24 digital ch. I hated them so much as they sound too brittle. Around that time I also had a Presonus M80. The M80 may have been a good to keep, but I did not have the best mics then so it did not sound as great as it could have. I am not a big fan of Presonus gear anymore. I got rid of the Korg Mixers and the M80 for a MCI 416 Board. The MCI had a John Hardy Mic pre on it, and to me it was the bee's knees. I got rid of the MCI because it was becoming too high mainenance. I never got all 24 Ch working right. The guy (so called friend) who traded it to me said he would help me get it in perfect working order. NEVER DID! As much as I hated to let that baby go, I sold it for about half of what I had in it and bought the Behringer DDX3216 a couple of years ago and I am still using today. I am glad I got to use the MCI because now I know what great gear can do for your recordings. I wanted to get a smaller board too because I was thinking I might move at the time and I did not want to haull that monster around. The Behringer is great for what it is, I just hate how dull the mic pre's make things sound. I knew I was compimising getting the Behringer, but I was trying to get myself out of debt and did not want to pay more then I had too. I knew I would trade up again down the road; hopefully by the end of this year.

At one time I had a pair of Genelecs with a sub. They sounded good, but I did not lilke mixing with a sub. I am very happy with what I have today for monitors although I would like to upgrade one of my amps.

I once had a DBX 162 compressor that I LOVED. I traded it and some crap gear for a pair of UREI LA-4. The main reason was the 162 was stereo, and now with the UREIs, I have two seperate compressors. Maybe one day I'll get a pair of DBX 160.

I had an orginal Finalizer that I used for my A/D converter. I traded it for an OTARI Dat. I am still on the fence about that one.

The only mic I wish I did not part with now was an RE20.

Ok, now I am starting to get depressed. :(

My ADk SC-1's.

I have Km 184's now, but i loved the crunchy character those SC's had.

And i got em super cheap too.

Ill never sell another mic as long as i live. Its just a bad idea.

I regret selling a 12-string electric Ibanez Artist, never played it much, but it was a beautiful and unusual guitar.

Also, I've regretted selling a Roland RSP-550 but bought it again, and same with the Marshall SE-100 speaker emulator, bought and sold three times lol. Also bought/sold and bought again a Beyerdynamic MC834 LDC, very good mic.

Sold my Prophet5, Jupiter-6, and Roland Space Echo in the early '90s to help put my first wife through law school.

Then got rid of the wife 6 years ago.

I'm much happier now, but I still miss the gear some times. ;)

In the late 70's I traded in my orange colored Marshall 50 watt head and matching 1/2 stack for the "new" Music Man head and cabinet. Eric Clapton was using them and the guy in the store talked me into it. The next day I realized my foolishness and went back to the store and my Marshall was sold, I later found out that same salesman bought my Marshall head and cabinet and moved to the west coast. Ahh!
The other one would be a Gibson ES-347, traded it for a Strat and a lap steel. Still have that Strat and the lap steel but sure miss that guitar.

it's stories like these that make me Horde things. i've got to go to uni in september, which means my storage space is going to be about 25% of what it is now. hopefully my parents will be kind and let me keep stuff in the spare room, so i can run home and get it whenever i start to miss that amp/guitar/trombone/random pile of leads... :P

Andy.

Almost every guitar I've sold or traded comes back to haunt me. In order of disposition:
-- '60-something Fender Mustang
-- '72 (or thereabouts) Gibson ES-335
-- '75 Gibson SG
-- Mid-'70s Fender Strat

I also let a Fender Super Six (6 X 10 combo with Twin head) fall into an embarrasing state of disrepair, after cutting the head off the combo cab and using it for a few years, eventually just abandoning the thing at a friend's house.

Also, for some reason I can't remember, I just walked away from a homebuilt 2 X 12 cab that I made from a nice oak-veneered plywood, that was loaded with JBLs. I hope someone got some use out of it.

I haven't gotten rid of ANYTHING since, I think, the early '80s.

Jeeze Louise

let's see...

Early 80's LP Studio, just wish I'd gotten more money out of it.

Mid 60s? Epiphone (Coronet I believe, or something like that) again, for more money.

'74 or so Jazz Bass Deluxe, maple board with pearloid block inlay, again just so I could sell it for a boatload now.

Early 60s? Epi Melody Maker, double-cut, single pickup, if for no other reason than to keep it from subsequently getting 'improved'. Way to go, Dave...

Early 70s Acoustic 140 amp and matching 610 cab, just because Harvey was involved with it. That and it rocked for bass! I traded it for the aforementioned LP. The guy I traded it to probably set it on fire. Dean was a crazy mofo..

Some unknown 12 string acoustic that I 'inherited' when my cousin jumped bail and ended up going to the big house. RIP, Johnny. I should go out to his grave and play him a Johnny Cash tune. He was a huge fan. Anyway, I wish I still had it for sentimental reasons.

I wish I got more money for the Rhodes Stage 73. Glad I don't have it though. What a pain in the ass.

I wish I hadn't attempted to refinish a couple of guitars. They're still not done and it's been 30+ years. Hey, I've been busy.

I'm sure there's more, but I've been remeniscing too much here.

Be here now.

You let go of a 335?

What, are you crazy?

What did the Strat look like?
