Any words of wisdom about this preamp? Applications where it shines? etc. Is 100 bucks a good deal for a used one?

Good price..Works well for me with a SM81 on acoustic guitar..Definately a step up from the ART tube MP..Its a nice clean pre..you won't regret gettin' it for the cash..

Don

standard stuff

pretty much standard 2017 based preamp.
not a bad deal really if you need a clean, neutral sounding pre.

not going to blow you away though.

what do you currently own?

I'm currently using a Behringer 602 mixer. So the only place to go is up, I guess. Only other pre I've tried is the ART tube MP, and it didn't do anything for me, except maybe as a bass DI. I record mostly acoustic guitar and voice, mostly my own stuff. So I'm thinking a nice clean pre. The Behringer seems a little thin, but I don't have much to compare it to. I am also considering a DMP3, any thoughts on that?

yup, up you will go

the m-audio stuff and the event pres should be roughly equivalent in quality.

and they will be an improvement over your console pres. maybe undramatic on some instruments, and possibly very dramatic on others... but a general improvement. certainly if you build up a lot of tracks.

so find your best price and go for it.

i recently was looking for some extra solid cheap channels in the $200 category and this is the fruit of my research:

event, m-audio, symetrix sx202, studio technologies mic preeminence, rane dms 22, spl mikeman, uhh. i know there are more...

some of these are going to be a little better than the others, i would say the studio tech and spl are going to be slightly classier but way harder to find (both are more expensive units- maybe $500 plus new- that have low resale value). the rane and symetrix should be solid, nice simple pres that you can upgrade later. the event and m-audio stuff are the newer, better supported, more hyped products, and are much easier to find.

totally out in left field you might be able to get a stewart or a gaines audio pre. both are very rare... but generally good. stewart being colored, gaines not.

Thanks for the input guys. Saw the symetrix 202 going at a reasonable price on ebay recently. Haven't made up my mind on the event yet. Sounds like it would do the job, but I'd kind of like to have 2 channels.

Yeah, that sounds like a good deal. BTW, what's digibid? I'm not familiar with it.

digibid is this pseudo ebay. digibid.com.

they have a return policy which is good. but people have had some bad experiences with them (worse than ebay). the seller has an annoying amount of anonymity, and it is hard to tell who to trust.

so if something is sort of light, and you dont mind eating the shipping, it is very safe for bidding (since you can return it!). but if you buy some giant console, and it comes all screwed up, you are going to have to eat hundreds of dollars in shipping costs.

i have had some decent experiences with them. some things end up being very very cheap. like i got some new genelecs for $600 (the tiny ones).

to me i think the best deals come from big studios and so on, that dont want to deal with ebay, and the prospect of not getting paid, so they sell some old stuff and let it go for pretty cheap.
