Please share with us your experience with Event's new ALP5 monitor. I'm thinking of getting them for my mixing needs, thanks :)

Yes, I've heard a lot of good comments on the ASP8's Pingu but unfortunately my budget does not allow. I'm looking for something smaller that produce a fairly flat frequency response and well defined bass too, in other words as true as can be at ALP5's price range. I'd like some honest opinion from those who have worked with the ALP5. Your feedback is greatly appreciated, thanks.

This may sound silly at first but hear me out.

Buy one good speaker and mix in mono. Of course the mix will be stereo.

The results will be better than the mixes mixed on cheaper speaker in stereo i guarantee.

Just get a cheap shit pair to check stereo compatibilty.

Honestly Pingu, I totally agree with you on ASP8's but unfortunately I can't even afford one let alone two...yes, I'm broke...lol. Anyway I'm looking for a pair that suits my budget and hope you guys can give me some honest feedback, thanks :)

Whats your budget?

What are your ambitions in this game of audio.

My budget is in the range of:
1. Event TR5
2. Event ALP5
3. M-Audio BX5
4. Behringer 2030A
5. Fostex 0.5

I'll be mixing for TV & radio commercials and also several new upcoming bands.

Go over to the sweetwater.com forum and see what they have to say. I know there's a thread over there about the alp5's or whatever they're called. Try not to get discouraged by guys like pingu. Everyone here lately is on a "get the best you can even if you have to steal for it" kick which I don't totally agree with. Like I've said many times in the past. If people can make mixes on yamaha ns-10's, which are essentially bookshelf speakers, then people can mix on anything. Its just a matter of how well you learn the speaker. I'd say with Events reputation and the fact I own the 20/20bas v2's' to go ahead and try the new white cone events. I'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts, I"m considering them for a "B" studio.

Go and fu ck your self ass hole.

In 12 months when he realises all the mixes he did on cheap ass speakers for FILM are useless, he will welcome my discouragement and suck my know for it.

There are literally thousands of people using "less than stellar" monitors and getting great mixes. To say he won't be able to make a decent mix in 12 months on those Events isn't that intelligent. You've never heard them and you have no way of knowing their quality. Besides what happens in 12 months when he doesn't want to do this studio stuff anymore and he loses half of the 1300 bucks he spent on those monitors. Why not start with a smaller inexpensive monitor and see what happens. And like I said, how many great mixes are done on yamaha ns-10 which are known to be cheap ass speakers, more than a couple. Sorry you don't agree but telling me to "go fuck myself asshole" is uncalled for and extremely childish.

Next thing you will say acoustics dont matter.

Let me guess you have Alesis Mk2's aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh aahh

Its little kids like you that make me wish more mothers aborted their fetus's.

So do i as you can now see in my sig.

But i will say you are right and the guy should get the best speakers he can afford.

But its a bitch when you do get good speakers and hear how shocking the old mixes sound on them, if you know what i mean.

Motux,

Bring your favorite mixes or CDs to a local showroom and audition them for yourself. Even that is a faulty methid for a number of reasons, but it's the losest your going to cime to guarantteing happiness with your purchase in the first try.

If you don't have access to a dealer showroom to listen for yourself what works for you, then go ahead and buy the ALP5s from a place with a return policy. If you like them, great, you're done; if not, exchange them for the next one in line.

But whatever you do don't listen to advice from forums like this when it comes to speaker selection. Everybody's tastes are different, everybody's ears are different, and everybody's acoustics are different. For every model you mention you're going to find just as many positive responses as you will negative (even from people who have never heard the model you're asking about), you'll get 10 different responses from 10 different people unlees you happen to mention the exact make and model they already own, and every one of those responses will be virtually meaningless to you and your situation.

Well I can say switching from my bx5's to my 20/20's was a "Holy Shit" experience, but I still made decent mixes on my bx5's, just took longer.

Thanks for your feedback jonnyc & SouthSIDE Glen. There's no access to Event speakers and even worse, no return policy in where I live so I've decided to drive 4 hours to the nearest Event retailer sometime soon and bring along my fav CDs and a couple of my own mixes. I'll let you guys know my decision once I've done it.

I know I'm poor but I'll make the best of what I can afford. I believe it's not the tool that determines a great recording or mix (though it helps to work on expensive tools). It's our imagination and skill that makes the difference and I strongly feel nothing can ever replace that. Even if I do get the best and most expensive monitors, I'll still need some time to familiarise with it. Isn't all this about compensation with what we hear from the monitors we work with???

Btw pingu, I've worked with Yamaha's NS10's, Mackie's HR824's, Genelec's 1030A's, 1037C's & 1034B's in several studios before but I'm looking for something in between which is more affordable for my humble home studio.

Last but not least jonnyc, thanks for your genuine support for a poor musician like me. It's the attitude of people like you that keeps the music alive :)

PS: jonnyc, I went to Sweetwater's website like you said and saw many positive feedback on Event's ALP5 and I'm happy to know that my 4 hours drive to the nearest Event retailer won't go to waste.
