Out of all the microphones that I have collected through out my life's travels I have never owned a EV RE-20 until a few weeks ago.

And I have to say that I was missing out on a lot!

I put it up against a multitude of different microphones and the sound of the RE-20 is amazing.

I thought for sure that when I finally put it up against the Shure SM7b there would be a contender but noooooooooooooo trying to bring the 7b up in volume to match the RE-20 relieved a higher noise floor than the RE-20, and didn't sound as full either.

I don't know. I guess it only goes to show...........

it's amazing! they're so often compared, yet to my ears they are completely different beasts!

i find it to be closer to a 421, whereas the sm7b is closer to a d112.(on speech at least)

I know what you mean Paul. I can see those similarities.
I was doing all kinds of different styles of singing too!

And my associates girl friend was reading from a book as well.

Looks like I may be suggesting this microphone more and more.....must be why it's been around so long. :D ...What's that saying ~never keep a blind eye----or what ever the heck it is.

you're making me jealous. i'm in the market for one atm, what with mine being uselessly sensitive or whatever..

such a huge shame.

Try it on sax. It's great for that as well.

:) I sure will pohaku ;) On sax I had been using a 421, or a few other choices, but,

This microphone will be the new stud bull set out in the pasture with the rest of my microphone heard for superior breeding!

So I could pick up an Electrovoice 676 (Gold) for $75.
Is it worth it?

I think Supercreep is a big re-20 fan. Now I can't remember. I'm pretty sure that's the one. I'm surprised I haven't bought one yet myself.

You should get one Phil.
Then you could pass it around to all of the instruments like a cheap date and then they would all be satisfied.
I think you should get one....bet cha supercreep could talk you into it.

Paul....Are you saying that you have a broken RE-20? :(

that's exactly what i was saying :(
i thought it was you who was troubleshooting it with me?no?

basically it sounds ok on voice, if not a bit thin, but it doesn't handle high spl at all. Just peaks and crackles in front of a kick or bass cab.

however, chancer that i am, i phoned EV UK distributor today to discuss the terms of the capsules lifetime warranty.
It all boiled down to 'post it over to us and we'll fix it' :)

Well Paul there you go then. there was a post not to long ago about the capsule of a 20 being messed up and it's a real hassle getting to it let alone fixing it.
Great to hear that you can get it taken care of.

RE20 is my go-to vocal mic. It is spectacular. Every song except two on Cloud were recorded with the RE20.

And the best thing about it is the fact that I can park right in front of the console and track vocals without headphones.

It broke, and EV repaired it for 15 bucks. Turnaround was about a week. I'd replace it in a heartbeat.

How did it brake and what broke on it super?

And $15. to fix it! you can't beet that. Did they say what it needed?

They did, but I don't recall what it was. There's one guy, IIRC, that works in the shop. The price for your fix, obviously, may be more or less. Just wanted to chime in that EV was helpful and accessible, and I didn't feel taken advantage of.

The RE20 has been my go to mic for eons...well, back when I owned a studio anyway. I had a locker full of mics from tube condensors (including some truly odd ones like the PVM T9000) to a brace of 57's. I covered 90% of what I needed between the RE20 and the AKG C414. Everything else were just paperweights.

Cool Ya got any of those paper weights still hanging around? Or odd ones?
