I've seen a rash of the re27s used at local music stores.
Tell me a little bit more about them.....
Maybe I'll pick one up.

Rash?

I've heard that they're slightly better, but no practical experience. IF I had need for a dynamic, I'd probably get the RE-20 over the SM7b. But I don't at the moment. And most used RE-20's that I've seen on craigslist were --- I bought it, I used it once, and want what I paid less $20 for the effort. And I bought it at GC.
(no thanks)

That means I've seen 3 in the past month.

While the group praise may be slightly overstated, let's face it- The RE20 is used, at least some of the time, by almost every radio station in the USA that counts for diddly., and is used in almost every country on Earth. (I doubt the Chinese and Albanians use it much. The Chinese won't allow it, and the Albanians can't afford it) Only the SM7 comes close in terms of air time. If you turn on any radio station, whether a DJ, talk show host, or commercial, there's a better than 50% chance you are listening to an RE20. What's not to love? It's a *little* pricey, and I'd say it has earned the right.

And for the record, Moresound, I think it isn't your SM7 producing an unacceptable noise floor, it's more likely your preamp. What pre were you using? I think you just got a twinQ, which is pretty clean. I'd be surprised if you are getting a significant noise floor with that, with any mic, even the legendary gain-eating SM7. There is no doubt that the SM7 will test the clean gain limits of any preamp. The RE20 is a mic I don't own, but have used on multiple radio broadcasts. It is most definitely on the must-have list.-Richie

Hello Richard ....It's been a long time!
Yes I did send both of the mics through the same twinQ and the 20 was a bit quieter than the 7b. But only noticeable on very quiet passages.
And Damn those Chinese!!!....they just have to lighten up a bit.
