I walk the line
I've got the opportunity to get a KILLER deal on one, but I need to know what it's good for besides VO and bass drum. I'm afraid it's going to get snatched out from under me if I don't jump on it. I actually would rather have an SM-7, but I figured I could trade for it later, since the RE-20 is so much more expensive new.

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Get it!! its a killer mic. Good for VO, singing vocals, bass, bassdrum, floortoms, whatever..
just get it, or else send it to me!!

Please tell us, just to torture us, just exactly how killer the killer deal was. Under $200?

Well, not THAT killer.

I guess 'killer' is relative, but seeing as how MF (who, while not THE cheapest for eveything, is usually close to it) sells these for over $600, and this one (brand new, not used or a rental) is going for $300, I thought that was a hellacious deal. Please tell me if I'm wrong here, because, like I said, I really want an SM-7 instead, but I thought someone would probably be more than willing to make what they would consider a trade UP.

the sm7 is a great mic, but If i had an re20 i wouldnt trade it for anything...
Its one of those mics that you´ll always have a use for.
Sell your soul instead to get the sm7, and keep the re20. ;)
if you ever get tired of it (not likely...) you can probably sell it for as much as you bought it for.
I would prob try to get both, you can never have enough large diaphragm dynamics can you....?

The RE-20 is one of my favorite mics, and I find them much more versatile than an SM-7. RE-20s are one of my favorite mics for electric guitar amps, pretty good on kick drums, the only mic I would chose to use on electric bass amps (though I would rather use a good DI), and my first choice for acoustic bass. On upright bass, I find the RE-20 preferable even to great large diaphragm mics, largely because it has no proximity effect. This is particularly good when the bass player wants to be very close to the drummer, and you can position the mic so the drums are in the dead space of the cardioid pattern, and get it really close without have any nasty embarrassing bass build up. The RE-20 is one of the few mics which really belongs in all mic cabinets. There is absolutely nothing else which does what it does.

I just saw one go for $175 on ebay, also one for $255...

I agree that a RE 20 or the RE 27 n/d is almost a MUST in any mic cabinet.

Other uses. Any time you need to smooth out a brashy sound, like a muted trumpet that sound too harsh. Electric guitars that are too thin sounding (like stated earlier). Great for bass cabinet micing!!! Great for kick drums/floor toms. Great on saxaphones!!!

So many uses and that price is just killer for a new one! GET IT!!!

for sure... and the shockmount for $100 will make it look uptown, without a doubt;)...not that it is nec.. but the EV shockmount is one of the 'cooler' looking rigs imo.

For that price I would own it for sure:D

I have always wanted one:( But at $600 I have to many other things I need....

You can do it!!!!
