EV mics

Anyone have experience with any of the old Electro Voice dynamic mics? I'd like to put together a small variety of dynamic mics and was wondering if there are any EV gems out there.
 
Yea, they're pretty much all gems.

I think the old EV mics represent some of the finest recording microphones ever made.

really?..........i was just looking at some old ev mics and dug some of the mic bodies alot but i really have no clue how any of them sound. any particular ones that you used that stuck out?

the only dynamic mics that i've ever used are sm57/58, and a couple of cheapo audio technica's. do dynamic mics generally have rolled off frequency ranges? are there any smooth sounding dynamic mics to be found for cheap?

I got lucky and bought 6 used mics from this guy( they were from his fathers old studio back in the 60s and early 70s),3 RE10s, 2 RE15s and and old Beyer M88, all for about $120. They were beat to hell and I didnt think much about them. For the hell of it one day, I slapped one of the RE10s on my guitar playes cab and was totally blown away. If you seen this thing, you wouldnt even think it would work. But work isnt the word. That became my first mic of choice for distorted guitar from then on. Heres a pict of the one I use.

I got an EV 635 from eBay a while back for $30. Great investment if you ask me.

A lot better after I got them fixed ( I forgot the "some didnt work" part). The M88 is a real good all around mic, kind of like... the 421?.....maybe?.....(theyre both German anyway). And the RE15 is jammin. I would put it anywhere I use a 57. Its just that RE10 still sounds great on amps.
 
I LOVE THE EV RE-20 and RE-27!!!

I didn't quite know what to think about these things when I first came across them. I now find them in almost every studio's lineup here in Philly. I liked the sound nicely enough that I went out and got an RE-27 of my own for client recording when I can't do a studio audition.

Out of all my mics, this one is my current favorite. :)
 
They are mics you will find uses for...

On my weblink, the song 'got a new kitty" uses an RE ds35 (i think thats the number) for all of the vocals (it looks like and RE15, but with a bigger grill), and that same mic is also used on some of the vocals on "eye". I've used the really old ray-gun looking EV mics, that you see in music video's all the time for a vocal prop, on kick drum with surprisingly good results too...

Vocals of the screamed variety, electric guitar (though I can't recall exactly what I thought of it), recording live rehearsals of bands I've been in (omni pattern is nice for this, just stick it up about 7 feet and place it where there's a good balance), and for the pastor's microphone at my wedding (it was held outside and my friend and I provided the sound equipment). For the money I paid its more than excelled at everything I've asked it to do.
 
the pl series and the re series are both pritty reliable.

Sometimes,when you stumble,you fall in dog shit, sometimes you fall into a good deal on mics. (Most of the time its dog shit though)
 
If I could have only one pair of mics, they would be RE16's. The RE16 is the same capsule as the 15 with a windscreen. They're easier to find than the 15's and you can unscrew the top of the 16 and use it "naked" for a 15 sound. I also have a pair of 635a's (omni) which have the same capsule as the RE50, a broadcast standard and basically a 635 with a windscreen. Both are a little bass shy (less proximity effect than a sm57) but very even and natural sounding mics. A lot of great recordings were done with both of those mics. I prefer the 16 over the 57 for most recording. Not so good for PA because the signal isn't so strong, maybe that's why they aren't so poplular these days, but very honest sound.
 
amen on the 635a. double amen! cool on acoustic instruments!! weird for a dynamic.

check out the pl20 - same mic as the re20...cheaper!

Uhhh ummm............fuck off buddy. If you took any offense to my post, that's your issue, not mine. Nothing offensive was intended. Ohhh but now, you can stick your $3 dollar cables and $70 "studio monitors" straight up your asshole.
