i have an old blackface adat with 4.03 firmware.it is a standalone unit in my studio and is not synced to anything.i was doing a session with a local song writer tonight,he was sailing along on his acoustic guitar and singing his heart out when all of a sudden the adat stops dead.so i located back to the start point and started him over and watching the machine this time,it flashes er-8 and stops.so i look up error 8 and it says something like"lost sync, tape will stop" and under solution says"check for bad sync cable"...hmm.....nothing synced and no sync cable, lost sync error code.hass anyone out there seen this?

If you're not sync'ing to another machine - it's likely that the timecode on the tape itself can't be read... bad tape, bad format - rent another unit and try the tape there, if it doesn't exhibit the same issue, I'd say the unit needs servicing - if the tape does do the same thing, it's likely the tape...

Correct. There are many mechanical issues that could effect this.

Have you cleaned the tape heads recently?

thanks,bruce...i think you are right about the tape.i was up last night recording on another tape without incident.when i popped the problem tape back in and played with it,it would give me an er-7 in playback at the exact same spot it gives an er-8 during recording.....
