and myself,

all dug your tune Erland.. Keep em coming..

Hopefully with the collaboration of crawdad and Lt. Bob, this will be one of many, by many.. :D

When I first heard the tune, I grabbed the electric guitar and my trusty EBow, and went to town..:D I figured I would get many complaints if I distracted from his voice, so I erased it and did this...

As for how it went down, Erland put up a 192kbps mp3 on his Nowhereradio site.. I downloaded it, burned it to a disc, loaded it into my 788 portastudio, (Guernica:D), then added my part, then burned it back to a disc, then turned it back to an Mp3 160kbps..

The keyboards were a Roland JV 10-10 with the 'Orchestral 2' expansion card. I have other cards that I use, but that's what was used for this. I always run the JV 10-10 through a BBE Sonic Maximizer..no other e.q. The piano was #4 off the 'Session' card..I also have an Alesis QS6.1 with expansion cards. The best sounds are usually on the cards IMOP.

That's about it dudes... I tried to take it easy, and it was fun...

Anyone who wants to collaborate, just drop me a message..

thanks for the feedback on my end... Erland wrote another nice one...

Great!

Another great collaboration with samicide! :D Man.......you have such a knack for coming up with interesting and unique countermelodies, I love it!

And Erland.......what can I say? Really good tune and the way the two parts meshed didn't sound like a long distance collaboration at all. really fine stuff. I liked the melody a lot and I personally didn't miss a bridge. Some one said it was hypnotic and that describes it well.

Is there any doubt in anyones' mind that we need to do lots and lots of collaborations? ;)

Hey Sam,
I have an old Sonic Maximizer, what kind of settings do you use for the 1010?
I'd like to try it on my module.
Does it give a big improvement?

Thanks.
Best to you,
Pete

Ah! I finally was able to download this tune--don't ask me how! I enjoyed it very much, both as a song and as a production. I thought the cello could have been down 2-3 db, but thats more of an artistic subjective choice. Overall, it sounds great. All the parts you added are very nice. Only thing that could make it possibly better would be the same parts played with real instruments, and a fade out into something, I dunno--ethereal maybe.

Excuse me for thinking out loud. Its really an excellent piece on both of your parts. Man, I'll tell you what--its wonderful to hear well crafted music like this--and great to see the collaboration happening!

Guess I shouldn't have been suprised as you are two of the more talented dudes round here, but I still find myself being a little taken aback by the 'completeness' of this track, it sounds so good, production wise, song wise, etc--it rocks!

Can't say too terribly much about what I think it could use, I (like Mix) am a pretty big fan of reverb and think some o that could really phatten up that cello (which, btw is really nice) and those etheral voices, which I think could be thickened/layered or just plain give some more oomph. I guess it would kinda defeat this tunes integrity but man how I'd love a nice bongo/congo beat to come in bout 2/3 of the way through and jam it out till the end, would work well I think. Anyways, I agree that this type of talent can't sit too much longer....

very very cool indeed

Whos that Earland chap anyway? Er Er.....

I am sitting my last ever ever exams right now, my computer has died too, indeed very busy, these Uni computers are quite feeble (no sound)......bugger, arse...

Anyway, just to say to Sam that was a great mix. It is completely different! in the best possible way of course. Its amazing how this stupid gentle little tune changed so much with your, quote "Bits and Bobs"! I almost stopped myself sending it to you but It sure served its purpose and made my revision a lot more interesting.

I have to go now and revise. Thankyou guys. Your the best and this place, best site google ever spouted out...

:)

hey muze, I have the BBE 462.. I have heard that earlier versions didnt sound as good. I'm not sure which one you have, but I have heard your last bit of tune and it sounded pretty good without it..... the settings for this was, I had the 'low contour' and 'process' knobs both just under 12 o'clock for the violins and voices, and slightly higher for the cello.. I think it works good for me on sounds like bass, cello, Roland piano etc. I dont use it on the Alsesis QS6.1 because there samples seem to be bright enough. I like the Roland for its piano and strings, but the Alesis is wwwwwway better IMOP for pipe organs.

I think it adds a big improvement when not abused. I dont like to mess around with e.q. too much, so this way has been somewhat satisfactory for me. I think you could probably get the same results if you were good enough at using your e.q... I am not. I always use the BBE on bass, whether synth bass or real. I usually never use it for drums, I only sometimes use it for guitar, and have been using it lately for vocals.. I think you just have to avoid BBE saturation, but using it a little bit helps background stuff stand out without having to raise the volume....like on bass.

May as well play around with it.. as long as your not paying for studio time, why not? :D

later muze.. not sure if I answered your question, but feel free to ask again, or drop me a p.m. anytime..

Well... I'm gonna be tough... I'm gonna be frank... I will spare no one's feelings...

Hhhhmmm...

***WATYF ponders...

That was good.

:)

I liked it. Not just the song... which.. well.. goes without saying.. but the re-mix was well done. Nice piano accompanyment Not "overdone", although I'm kind of still deciding if I liked the piano intro... It was bordering on being "out of place"... maybe just the accompanyment would have been more natural. Nice cello... once again.. not over-done. Nice "Riverdance"-ish fiddle lead during the bridge. The piano got a little too up-front at the end.. (2:50 something) but other than that.. good mix and an improvement over the original.. (which is hard enough to improve on as it is) :p

oh yeah.. and the ending was a nice touch.

I have been thinking about actually buying a real cello or violin.. I think I might have to. When I do, I will probably redo this..

thanks for the comments about my parts..

I was worried about ruining it... I'm glad Erland's people dont hate my additions.. :)

Now who's the best?!!!

Nice Job Guys!
Leave it to Sab to darken the mood.Just goes to show, there is no contest. So all you 'vote for the best' douchebags out there, especially the thread starter, not to mention anyone by name, should all get on with your lives.
My hat is off to all sound creators who don't care if they're the best or good or if no one else likes there shit. They realize they
still have something to 'say'.That said, get on with it!!!Do it now, your wasting time!!!!

damn Sam, maybe that's why I ignored you. You guys are so far advanced that I'm not worthy. You are Tiger Woods. he he he he

Not much I can add to what's been said, just want to say I'm yet another listener enjoying your work, feeling fortunate to have discovered this. Kudos.

When you say keyboards, I assume you mean cello, choir, and piano, not just piano, right? I have been considering one of the JV orchestral exp. boards.

so happens I started a thread titled "vote for the best" in which it seems my compliments to two indivduals got mistaken for some kind of contest...especially in your eyes Mr W.I.S.C. If you are referring that I need to get on with my life, I can only tell you to go copulate with yourself, as with an assuming attitude like yours, you'll be on your own most of the time, it would seem. I think you're too green around the edges to this place to think there is some sort of competition, and that EVERYONE, I've conversed with here all have something musical to say...but personally, I see nothing wrong with trying to create something that a fellow listener would like, and care about doing so. Additionally, I see nothing wrong with trying to improve to be a little better than the next person. That seems like human nature, and goals to achieve. If you're just to self centered to just please yourself all the time, then you might as well just go sing in a cave all by yourself, if you don't care about the world around you. I feel you're pointing your finger at me, and if so, you haven't a clue at this point, what my musical aspirations, abilities, and goals are at this point. All I can say is stick around, as it seems you have a lot to learn.

W.I.S.C. - dude, you have it wrong.. mixmkr is one of the main reasons why I post songs at all... I admit I am not crazy about that thread, but mix has offered more tips to more people than anyone else I have ever seen here....and that gives him the right to start a thread on whatever he wants.. I appreciate the positive comments though.. Bash me all you want, but try not to bash others in this thread because it is Erland's tune..:) thanks

ap - thanks dude.. yeah all the other noises all came from the Orchestral 2 expansion card... the piano was from the 'Session' card. I ran the JV through a BBE Sonic Maximizer.. There is a difference from Orchestral 1.. I really like some of the Roland sounds.. I also really like my Alesis QS6.1 though. I guess I have to like them because it's all I can afford right now.:)

dtb - heheh thx..

mixmkr - nice restraint... that could have been ugly..:)

Nice job Erland..

well now boys, I didn't know it was contest, I'm gonna really record some good shit now! he he he he, just kidding. Look, IMO,
I think most homerecordist are in a contest with themselves. Does anyone here sit and compose and record and them mix and all the other stuff to do it better than someone else? That sounds strange, even if it is the nature of the beast to compete. I for one, certainly do not, can not, don't want to compete with anyone except myself. If I get a tune to sound better each time I lay it down either from a recording view or just a playing view then I'm happy. I love it when my wify says, "that should be on the radio" or "that's great, and they did that in their basement", when I throw one of YOUR tunz her way. My son will say, "why don't yo shit sound like that?" he he he he he

Sorry for the rant!

dtb

I guess there's some subconcious competition going on. At least for me. A part of me is trying to impress people a little with my mixes, and maybe it does good for the mixes, and maybe not. The main thing is, that it keeps me motivated to do better mixes, when I hear something mindblowing from you guys.

Sam, I have the same card. I think you mentioned that it was #4. It's the only piano I like of the bunch(though the looping on the lower notes is a little too obvious). It's got a real rounded tone to it. Sounds great in the mix you did.

No reply to WISC. He/She obviously doesn't know you all well enough to realize that the spirit of it was more about "which artists on the board have affected you the most?" rather than "who would you vote for president of your eigth grade class?"

I totally agree! I also like the piano on my Alesis sometimes, but #4 on the Session card is my main piano.. thanks for the comments dude..

Hey Mixy,
I could really give 2 shits about what you do in your spare time...Oh wait...you have none cuz your all caught up in this forum.Do you realy give a fuck what I think?I mean honestly,I've read your comments and listened to your songs way before I entered this forum.Don't be so sensitive.Just admit your 'vote for the best' thread was a stupid idea.Just like telling me to 'copulate with myself' was stupid. What?Jesus wouldn't say fuck?I think he would...but you shouldn't care what I think, dummy!!And another thing guy,if artist relied on what would be marketable to give them direction and/or inspiration ,great musicians like Henrdicks,Ian Anderson(Tull),King Diamond,(Just to name a few in my limited time to write)would not be around for the world to enjoy,Fuck the radio,it's all so pre-dick-table and all the DJ's(Dick Jerkers) suck. That's what makes me pissed, same 20 songs, same lame contests, same ignorant dickheads running the stations that the masses listen to.When is it gonna be enough? And why would you as an artist want to promote the oppression of talented people due to seemingly unmarketable products. They can take their marketability and shove it.Shame on you sir!The two most promising artists in the forum, according to you, got together and created a great song without caring who was better or smarter or 'more marketable'.I do care about the world around me and it's people like you who make life harder for everyone, trying to be better than this person or that one.Just be the best to yourself and people will see it inside you that youv'e reached a point in you life that your happy with who you are,cuz we're all really the same...human.Each of us with our own potential for greatness but mixed in to a harsh and assuming world.so,let the numbers speak for themselves and stop fuckin with the natural course of evolving artistry.
You have an obvious knowlage(sp?) of music and your talented in your own right, please continue to be a help and an inspiration to the members of this forum.I didn't want to start anything,I just saw something that was wrong and wanted to let everyone know that they speak up if they thought like I did.Peace to EVERYONE.Down with Dick Radio.
