david k, i'm sorry about your girlfriend.
now about that violin, i bet that thing sounds great in a real studio. You can really hear the wood, it's just the room that's causing trouble with the mix imo. actually i think this arrangement would sound beautiful if the three of you were all in David's room. i mean it sounds beautiful as is but you can hear three separate elements. David's kitchen, Erland's room, and Jeff's sound more like a processed environment.
So here's my play by play after three listens.
1. I love Jeff's opening guitar stuff. That's just sublime.
2. see violin comments above. except i do think the stiffness that mixmkr refers to might actually have to do with your mic. the attack of the first notes sounds a little abrupt imo, but that could be because you're using a mic that doesn't really allow you to accurately capture the full dynamic range of your playing. i also listen to a lot of very good recordings of classical violin, and there is a lot of detail to capture that probably isn't coming through....just a thought.
3. This one I should have posted in erland's orignial thread but TURN UP THOSE BACKING VOCALS. That stuff has genius in it. There was a hint of the kind of stuff on Paul Simon's Graceland album there. Maybe I'm the only one who heard that and was stunned by how absolutely cool it sounds.
4. The congas sound great. Triton sounds? Damn they make some realistic sounding congas. I'm just adding up the dollars I'd need to spend to do real congas right now and......maybe I'll just buy a triton. I mean the bass guitar that Guernica cranked out of that thing was awsome!

5. Jeff, I think some of the rythm guitar that you're playing is clashing with Erland. Maybe it's cause I heard his first but, I'd like to just hear his rythm guitar alone with just your tasty licks added.
6. The more I listen, the more that violin is really jumping through the mix, as is the guitar. Erland is getting lost, but without having separate vocal tracks it's hard to get him up front with this much going on.
7. Jeff that stuff at 1:17 is your shit! I love it when you do that.
8. I think the bridge could use a nice dual violin arrangement. Maybe not.
9. Jeff, that took some guts adding the solo section to the song. I think it works. pretty cool.
10. nice stuff both of you. i was working on something that's about as different from this as I can imagine. maybe some day i'll post it? this just sounds so classy to me that i'm afraid I won't.
11. Jeff, I'm glad you removed the triton boys choir from your first mix. That was disturbing to me for some reason.
