I was wondering if you record in a room that isn't soundproof do u still need to add eq to the vocal because what I was told that eq is only added to make the vocal sound not dry and I know that the soundproof room is what makes the vocals dry so if the room isn't soundproof do u really need to eq?????

Hi RD423, The sound of your vox will vary depending on a few things. The ambience of the room. Most rooms have a certain amount reverb in them already. You usually don't want to record in a totally soundproof room it will sound bassy and muffled.
So go ahead and record, and if the vox sounds too dry then you can add some reverb to it via an outboard processor or reverb software.
EQ will only change the dynamics of the track. Tonal differences, not differences in time. Basically you just have to listen to what you have, then decide what you need. Just tinker around with the knobs for a while, then you'll start to understand.

Seems to be some confusion of definitions here.

Soundproofing usually refers to transmission of sound from the room to the outside, or visa versa. For example, there is a studio in my area that is buried under a large hill. The studio is soundproof, because no passing truck or airplane noise can ever get into the tracking rooms, nor can the music ever bother the neighbors. This has little or nothing to do with the quality of sound inside the room itself - which in a soundproof room could theoretically range from excellent to sucky.

If you create something approaching an anechoic chamber, you are talking about eliminating acoustic reflections in the interior of the room. Almost invariably, rooms like that are terrible to record in, even after adding back ambience with artificially produced reverbs and delays. Adding or subtracting EQ would not alter the fact that natural ambience is missing. It would be kind of like giving a really thirsty person a guitar - a guitar is a useful thing to have, but doesn't have any direct bearing on quenching one's thirst (unless you can trade it for something to drink).

Good thing you told him that, or he might of accidently built an anechoic chamber.

Someone may have already said this and you might already know but you can eliminate the room by getting closer to the mic. Be careful though, depending on your mic, the closer the source gets to the mic, its sound can change drastically.

If you knew this already.... sorry!

Thanks for all of your help I was just wondering because someone that I met on here that "supposedly" has there own studio said that you can tell that our songs needed eq but the other studios in my area that I let hear it can't tell the difference they thought that we did it in another studio. But I knew that he really couldn't tell because I sent him a song that we did in a "real" studio and he said that it needed eq also but after that I knew that he couldn't tell and I was just wanting more info on eq but yall helped a lot so basically it's if I think it needs it do it and if not don't thanks everyone
