After years and years of tinkering, I've found a sound like sits well with me. For years I didn't use a pedal at all, I have 4 right now that I use sparingly, 2 of which are wah pedals (different models, but always on at the same time) The biggest part in finding "my sound" was the amp. I don't think an EQ pedal right now is going to "fix" your tone. It may shape it to sound better than it does without it, but I'd say you are much better off saving some money and picking up a better amp, then go from there.

I bought a Boss EQ for live work, it's to noisy for the studio though

Another nod for the Dano Fish and Chips. You can pick one up on ebay for less than $30.00. It's just as quiet and effective as the Boss, but less than half the price. I felt I needed an EQ pedal because my 1959 tweed amp doesn't have any tone controls and I really needed to notch the 'honkiness' out of it. It also works quite nicely as a lead boost.

That's one impotant thing... working in studio. If you're saying this stomp boxes is kinda noisy it's gonna cause some problems when recording. Maybe I could work with a rackmount paragraphic EQ.

Just curious, what amp are you using?
I'm ashame to tell you... hahaha I start to play electric guitar with a Crate GX15 and I'm still working with the same amp. I rent a studio room to practice with my band. It has two Marshall (JC900 and JCM2000) with 4x12 cabs. Muuuuch better.

Here are some songs with no pedals of any kind. 3 different bands

I have more, this is just stuff I could put up at the spur of the moment.

I'm not into the new metal stuff but it sounds great!!! So... no EQ in your setting? Would you mind in telling me something about your gear? I would appreciate that.
The first two songs were many layers of various Marshalls and Mesa Boogies. Mostly Marshalls, Most of the time we used a JCM 800 and a JCM2000 TSL

The last one was a sansamp psa-1 through a 4X12 cabinet.

you know the last time I played in anger it was a real complicated setup

there was

1x player (me)
1x guitar (parker fly supreme)
1x lead (damn long with neutriks)
& 1x amp (musicman 1x12 combo)

I was brought up with that basic setup & although I have more gadgets than one could shake a stick at it's good to get back to absolute basics & not have any stompers to get in the way of the playing. To many people I've seen & met get to hung up on their pedals

what a range of tones!!!

BTW for recording you want to get your sound as close as possible before touching an EQ & yes I believe a parametric rackmount would be the way to go & spend some serious cash on it

& metalzone through my musicman was one unbelieveable recorded guitar sound, an SM57 front of cab & a beyerdynamic 201 back of cab

Nothing to be ashamed of! :) Gotta start somewhere. I remember when me and my friends first started jamming and we would all play through like....4 practice amps in my bedroom. It was the worst sound you could ever imagine. God knows what we split the signal with. I dont even remember. Anyways, I know you've probably heard it a hundred times, but here it goes, before you go blowing money on pedals maybe you should just save up and get some tubes. Good luck

He's right, it is nothing to be ashamed of. We are all just trying to keep you from falling into the trap of getting more and more stuff in an effort to make something bad sound a little better.

It's true, I understand that I'm getting the bloody EQ to fix the MT-2 sound instead of getting a decent tube amp that won't need a stomp EQ to sound good. great advice. It's time to start saving money.

but if i may add : i have this cute 5 watt epiphone all tube and i use an eq pedal to boost it and to shape the sound somewhat. sounds awesome.

Thanks. There was nothing but a guitar connected right to an amp. One of them was a POD pro. Let's see if anyone can tell which.

Funny you should say that....

I had one and, on its own or with an MZ-2 it was OK. However if I tried to use it with the Boss OD-20 double distortion pedal or a PodPro it boosted the noise floor to the point where I couldn't it was just unusable !

Sad really 'cos I later, after I sold the GE-7 Eq pedal I discovered that the OD-20 was a really cool, versatile and great sounding bit of kit !
