I need a mac to use protools, i learned the hard way. for a p4 dell inspiron LAPTOP with 2.8 ghz and 512 ram, 100 gb hd, what would be the equivalent value for a mac DESKTOP. Note that my willingness to trade for desktop would allow me to get more power. any suggestions?

trade

trade in ur pro tools for something that doesn't force you to use a certain type of pc.

Not that pro tools does, but yes it is somewhat made for mac.

you may be able to trade it for a mac mini. with no monitor keyboard mouse. but at least you got a mac.

its not just that. I've been wanting to switch to mac for more than recording. I used to have a pc bias, but every day i grow more and more of a liking for macs for:

general performance
3d imaging
recording
digital imaging

"general performance,3d imaging,recording,digital imaging"

do your research before switching..

i forsee digidesign getting very very upset over the fact that mac switch its platform to being intel based.. especially if you think about it, digidesign blew millions and millions of dollars writing software for their old platform.. all that , is now useless...

I dont know what your issues are with 3d imaging? im a heavy Catia user.. all 3d imaging performance is heavy related to the graphics card you have..

just make sure you do some research.. i can think of more than a handful of reasons why your Dell p4 2.8 didnt perform as well as you would have liked..

dell

I would probably say, that the fact that its a dell is one of those reasons. Nothing against dell, or users of dell.. but I myself have not seen one that wasn't a big pile.

i can understand that statement fully. i think dells are great for business use, but if you want to do something that requires the machine to perform to the potential it is supposed to reach, then you are dissapointed.

as for the research, i use cinema 4d and maxwell rendering for my 3d imaging and i have a render machine but i think that with a mac (from personal experience), you can run so many more simultaneous tracks at once without any overload.

am i wrong?

thanks for the help so far.

Im quite anti dell, but unless you have actual experience with their models, then you probably shouldnt post up negative comments about them... the Precision 670 is one powerful computer.. load your own image onto it instead of the one provided by dell, and it performs very very well...

i do have experience with their models, and they are no good. im sure the precision 670 is great, but im very sure that for another hundred dollars, you could get a mac that does twice as much. an extra hundred isnt worth it to some people, including me 6 months ago, but i think ive seen the light :)
