honestly, generally i agree with you. seriously most music created in the "manipulation of data" method sucks.
but their are exceptions, with communication and feeling..... valid works of art.

if none of it sounds good to you then to me you just sound like one more old man who refuses to see the reality of change.

a lot of people thought rock was crap, not valid in any way and nothing you could say could convince them otherwise. but despite their cries, people kept making it.
and i realize that your thinking "it's not the same, you can't compare rock to some stupid set of clicks and beeps" but of course that’s what you'd think.
that's exactly what some people thought of rock (or insert ANY style of music here)

What I'm saying mister giraffe, is that the clicks and beeps don't speak to me. So I can't give them any validity. I doubt that I will ever hear a manipulation of data that produces an emotional reaction in me. BUT.....I must admit that the possibility exists. It IS possible. It is also posssible that money will fall from the sky. It is foolish, and I have been known to be foolish, to say things like never and always. And I have said "never" in this thread....I admit that.

Don't blame it on us "old guys". :) Don't hate us because we've been around the block enough times to actually occasionally know what we're talking about :D .

HAAAAhaaaa :D .....Oh shit I AM old.... :( Oh well....with age comes wisdom. :p

Ummm, unless you're lying about your age on your profile, you still actually have a ways to go before old-dom.*

This ain't Logan's Run, ya know. :D

* at my age I HAVE to say that :o

Naaahhh....I'm 30. 31 on saturday. I may not have reached "old-dom" :D , but the sneers and "what the F are YOU doing HERE?" looks I get at local underground metal shows would certainly suggest otherwise. Oh yeah - and I don't have peircings, long hair, combat boots, nail polish, black and white makeup, and I shower every day, wear other colors besides black, and I have a job and a wife..... so maybe those looks are NOT because I'm old......:D

(I'm joking here people....don't go and get all sensitive about the metal lifestyle...)

my point is only that good music is good music. and if you have a set of rules to determine what is good, you're probably going to miss out on something you may really like simply because the boxes on your musical check list don't have ink in them (per say)

i just think that you have limits in place on what you will allow yourself to like
and even if something that you would like comes allong, you'd reject it because it dosn't fit your current definition of music.

good music is good music, no matter how it is produced.

Ah, but there's a big difference there, Giraffe.

i'm not, for the record, trying to say that "click and beep" style will ever be as popular as rock. just that someone not thinking of it as art dosn't make it so.

Art: the products of human creativity.

There are many other definitions, but this one is what I think applies to this thread most effectively. Yes, the manupulation of data IS art. I have not denied this. It meets the most basic definition of what art is. It is my firm belief that WAAAAAAY to many things meet this most basic definition and are granted (or more to the point - the creators demand) much more than the most basic validity.

(you know...it just occured to me....HUMAN creativity.....that does not include random loop generators and such....hmmm.....)

You made my day with the above... :D

Zed, listen to Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I think your oppinion about samples will change.

You seem to have some rather strange and arbitrary restrictions on who and what you'll record, Zed. I've heard of people refusing to record bands who play racist or mysoginistic music, but telling someone that you won't record them if they go beyond certain creative boundaries seems weird. Then again, if you're just recording yourself and your friends in your basement, I guess it doesn't hurt you to set those kinds of restrictions. If you refuse to record anything other than Arkansas jug bands, who are we to say you shouldn't?

I suspect Zed's mind is pretty fixed where it is.

Unbegun, premenating bizarre
Swept away to the castle of Cantar
What....

Man, if those lyrics aren't a bunch of meaningless organized noises, nothing is. :D

Arbitrary: Determined by chance, whim, or impulse, and not by necessity, reason, or principle.

I have clear reasons and priciples behind my choice to not have anything to do with automated data manipulation. My stance is therefore not arbitrary. :D I don't think my point of view will be understood by many, and that's fine. One day the technology will come that enables every kid with the mental capcity of an Amoeba to push a couple buttons and be instantly rewarded with his own original music. Wait...doesn't that exist RIGHT NOW?? OHHH the talent required to do THAT!!! Let's all bow down to the masters of button pushing...... :p

And I do this in my SPARE ROOM...not my BASEMENT....so there.

My opinoin of samples is not all negative. It is the APPLICATION of samples that CAN be negative.

Zed10R said:

I guess you could say that playing a piano is nothing more than pressing a bunch of keys. Let's all bow down to the masters of key pressing! Or that playing guitar is just pressing down on a few tensioned wires. Let's all bow down to the masters of pressing tensioned wires! Or that playing drums is just beating on skins. Let's all bow down to the masters of skin beating! Actually, that last one sounds bad. Let's not.

The point is that all of these things can be used in ways that are creative and interesting or ways that are not. Take a listen to Menomena. That band almost exclusively uses looping and sound manipulation to create their music, and a lot of it sounds really good. There are plenty of artists like that. Godspeed is another. The fact that they use studio manipulation does not mean that it is not good music. Many such bands do things with studio manipulation to create soundscapes that boggle my mind. It involves a great degree of skill and talent. The idea that creation of music like that involves no more than "pressing a button" is rediculous.

I've gotten into these kinds of discussions before though, and I've found that once someone is set in their ways about something like that ("hip hop isn't music" is always a good one), it's pretty much pointless to try to change their mind.

i wasnt ganna say it out of common courtesy to old people... but yes

And pray tell... what exactly is "old" to you?
Why are your ages not in your info?

Wait a minute, why am I asking... I'm only 24 :D
