EQing a bright mic

My vocals that I have been recording are sounding extremely bright compared to the rest of my mix. (old cheap AKG basic vocal dynamic mic being used).

I'm not terribly experienced with using EQ, and wanted to know what I should be doing to make it sound more "dull" to fit into the mix better.

I am using ProTools LE and the default EQ plugins (and I don't even know if I need 1 band, 4 band, 7 band etc..).

ummm... do you know about the range of human hearing (20-20k hz) and how it relates to EQ?

Find the offending frequency and cut it a few dbs. A band is a point at which EQ is applied. 2 band means you can cut or boost two different frequencies and so on.

Using a parametric eq, sweep the frequency setting up and down until you find the frequencies that you don't like. To explain:

Initiate a single band on your eq. Dial in a large boost of about 6 db or so, then grab the frequency knob and run it up and down through the range listening to what it does to the sound. When you hear the frequencies that you hate jump out at you you'll know where you probably want to cut.
You may find more than one place where you would like to cut (or boost) a little. That's where you would use more than one band.

People have different interpretations of what "too bright" sounds like. But when you're fishing with your EQ, you probably want to pay special attention to between 5k and 10k. Just for starters.
