Hello,

I am currently recording a friends Emo/Hardcore band. Think along the lines of Thursday, The Used, Hot Water Music, etc. I am looking for some different EQ settings to try out to make the guitars (with distortion) sound a bit more polished. I have tried my own settings, i'd just like to get some other input as well. Thanks a lot.

This is not what you will want to hear but, I am a firm believer that you shouldn't need EQs.

ditto whqt locus said. but ill elaborate a litlle more for you.
if you dont get the sound you want when you record the source and you start throwing eq on stuff its gonna more than likely start crossing the frequences between other instruments and sound muddy. ive found this to be true in alot of cases and it realy pays off to get the best sound at the source. the only thing i use eq for anymore is if somthing majorly is way over bassy or there isnt enough bass then i will use a cut or add a little to that frequency, and im learning the hard way to not do that and to get it wright at the source thanks to these guys here on the bbs.
ive heard people use eq with sucess but they have spectrum annalyzers and can tell what frequencies are open or are being used already. so i hope this helped you and i know how hard it is to get that hot sound your after because ive been trying for quite some time, one thing that helps is to take the rythm guitar and track it twice with a little bit different setting for both and pan them left and right hard this will fill the sound out and they will certainly sound much fatter. good luck with this and im sure if you can get them to do a second rythm track you wont regret it.
god bless flash

Anyone? The guitar is already recorded with rented mics, so re-doing it isn't really an option. I do realize it works best to get the best sound you can from the source (which I did my best at). I'm just looking for suggestions that may be able to polish up the sound.

Thanks,
Ryan

If you record again check out the eq settings on their amps. Are they happy with their live sound? Too muddy? Make sure that not all of them have the same settings.

How many guitars? Try using a little subtractive eq on one track and run the opposite on another. Like -3db at 1khz on one, +3db 1khz on the other. Play around with "nooks and crannies" And panning stuff even just a little can open up the sound.

Like scottboyher suggested, cut the lows to give the bass some room and make sure you've got some mids.

Well, first you have to have the attitude. So...get REAL mad at your parents. Then think about something that a teacher did to you that was wrong....no...no...a bully! A bully said something to you and your not gonna take it anymore! Cause he doesn't know who he's fucking with! They can't treat you like that!
Then, throw in some stuff about partying or beer or masturbation, but don't swear though, you still want them to play it on the radio........

Nah, I'm just screwin around. EQ for EMO? That's a tough call. I always have a hard time relaying EQ info. Because it almost always depends on the situation. Just make it sound good.

post some sound clips, and im sure we can help (or at least try to).

i play "emo/hardcore" and i don't eq at all unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. i just go with the untainted sound of my sg through my marshall. eq isn't something that has to be used. it's a problem-solver. most people turn it into a problem-maker.

That's very true. Thanks for all the help everyone, I have messed around with EQ a lot and decided I am just going to screw up the guitar tracks with it instead of make them sound better until I learn more.
