OK, this will show my stupidity even more. I realized I asked the wrong question in my other post. When I record on my 424mkii it says in the manual to set the EQ controls to their center "off" positions. Did that and then recorded. Then transferred the recording to my computer using Kristal which has a mixer of course. So...do I listen to my recording on tape, then re-record adjusting the EQ controls (obviously can't do it while I'm actually recording), or do I adjust the EQ using the mixer on Kristal when I do the mixdown. I plead complete ignorance so please be gentle.

The EQ in the computer will probably be a parametric and give you more control.
Other than the differences between the 2 EQs, it doesn't matter which one you use.

:D Yo Mr. C. C. C. Rider: [great blues tune]

Whichever way you do it, twiddle your EQ and just PLAY BACK the song and listen via the monitors. If you like what you hear, record it. If not, adjust EQ and dynamics too if needed. Play it back. If you like it, than mix it or burn it or record it. Sometimes you will find that you will like doing two, three, or more mixes just for the hell of it and the difference some delay makes in one mix as opposed to another.

That's the FUN of recording--experimenting and having your ears say, I DIG IT.

Green Hornet :D ;) ;) :D

eq on mkii

i always record with the eq flat, then fiddle with it on playback until im happy with the sound, then mix down

I'm of the opposite philosophy.

I prefer to apply EQ to the signal on the input-side, before it goes to tape, and EQ little or none on playback/mixdown. (Record with EQ active in the signal chain, down to tape).

I'll EQ a bit on playback, if necessary, but part of this philosophy says that if you get the most optimum signal to tape, you shouldn't need much EQ on the playback side. Therefore, I don't use much EQ in the playback/mixdown phase,... little or none. That's my philosophy, and it works for me. YMMV.

If the manual says "record with EQ set to 0", categorically, I'd just say to heck with the manual.

So...during playback I should be able to fiddle with the EQ to make adjustments then record it to my computer? Because I was messing around with that last night and nothing seemed to change at all.

In that case,...

make sure your Input Select switches on Channels 1-4 are set to TAPE, and your cabled up to the LINE OUTs.

Sounds to me like you might be cabled up to the Monitor Outs, and therefore would be listening to the cue mix.

Oh...so I wouldn't just be listening to the tape making adjustments...I have to actually be connected to line out? I'll try that out when I get a chance. But will I hear the adjustments through my headphones or monitors, or what??

As long as you're listening to the L/R buss, and not the CUE,...

and your channel inputs are selected to TAPE, it shouldn't matter whether it's the Line Outs or the phones.
