EQ for tracking.....or when is EQ flat?

When tracking/recording the norm is to have your console EQ set "flat".......................what is actually considered a flat setting when your console has 4 band EQ with sweepable mids............please someone, explain wtf "flat" is.

Flat is when all of your EQ cut and boost knobs are set to zero. There is absolutely no EQ changing going on. The sweeps can be set anywhere as long as the cut/boost knob is set to zero.

In effect, it is as if the EQ part of the mixer channel isn't even there.

Well, not always as if it weren't there... some boards have a bypass that takes the EQ out of the signal path.
I'm still working on how in the hell to EQ space out of everything when everything overlaps like crazy. I get some decent mixes going, but when I nail this, and I'll have notes of course, I will be a new man in search of a place to build my commercial facility

Re. sweepable mids:

If the levels are set to zero (probably 12:00 on your board), the frequency of the sweepable mid will not matter.
