Environment problem. Temporary fix or new mic?

Hey guys right now i dont really have the ideal recording environment because its an open room. Needless to say this is affecting my condensers sound drastically. So i was considering buying a "Mic Thing" to improve the microphone isolation. The only problem with this is I wouldn't have a place to see the lyrics. But for $220 I am thinking I would rather give a high quality dynamic mic like the Shure Beta 57a/58a a try instead. I'm just recording rap/r&b vocals and I liked the sound I got with dynamic mics in the past. Any suggestions and would my presonus tubepre be able to power the Shure's well enough? Also what are the main differences between the 57a and the 58a as I am having a hard time deciphering. Thanks for the Help

Instead of 220 dollars why dont you try recording in a closet up against the clothes. See if that helps before you make the jump on one of those things. You might be able to make something similar to it with what you have at home. Possibly get closer to the microphone, you will have less room noise because you'll increase the ratio of direct sound. Your pre should be able to provide enough gain for those mics.

What microphone are you using now? Is it a cardioid polar pattern? Omni? The tighter the pattern and closer you are will generally provide less room noise.

its a cardioid condenser. I recorded in a closet in my previous place but unfortunately we aren't able to do it anymore. Basically we are having recording parties where it is half recording half performance which is why I want to get into the dynamic mic scene.

How about up against some curtains or setting up a pillow and blanket behind the microphone? I dont have experience with the Shures. I dont understand half recording half performance? Maybe someone else will have better luck answering your question.
