engineer ears out there

can anybody tell the difference between these two songs I recorded.. the first was done with my motu 828 and the second one was done with my soundblaster live
SB live = 16 bit
motu = 24 bit



 
first off...both snippets...really nice stuff. I'd think the 2nd one might be a tad bass heavy...

as far as your question...I'll look like the fool....NOPE
 
I agree the second snippit is a bit bassier... i didnt have any set rules when I was mixing both the pieces.. I used alot more compression on the latter. Now I was thinking about saving for a pro tools setup, but geez will it sound any better? they are both 24 bit.. the converters might be a tad bit better... but for $10,000 its on the backburner
 
I gotta admit, it's refreshing the hear some stuff on "lousy" equipment. I'd love it if you happened to use a Marshall mxl2001p mic, and a Behringer board.....oh...and an Alesis 3630 compressor, for your icing! Mastered at home you say...? T racks??

I think this is the first time I am hearing your work. Excellent guitar sound. How did you mic it?

I think that 3 is the sb and 4 is the motu but I cant be sure at these low listening levels.
 
thanks cyan... 3 is sb and 4 is motu ... there must not be much of a difference. I dont know why I spent the extra $650 and got the motu if theres no audible difference. the acoustic is a takamine with an internal mic. i added reverb and slight delay through korg triton inputs
 
REAL nice stuff! I believe the first tune is the Blaster and second the MOTU. It sounds smoother, more detailed to me.
 
if 4 is the motu,

then its $650 well spent. It sounds noticeably better. It all boils down to the music though. With the kind of guitar and melodies that you have, one could not care if it was 8 bit digital or 2 inch tape.
 
Is the MOTU more than 2 channels?? It must be. That justifies the extra 650 right there. Imagine buying 4 soundblaster live platinums. Pretty much the same amount of money. I said platinum because the others would only let you record in with a miniplug and personally I don't consider that an option. I have to admit I don't hear a huge difference either in 16bit and 24bit. I have used my SBLive and gotten some good results too. But try recording a drumset with it and I'll bet you'll thank god you got that MOTU setup.

god i wish i was an engineer then i could actually say something smarter than:

"Man I love your stuff. Sounds great! It's got definite replay factor. Acoustic sounds 'mah-velous' Very nice! I would do anything to have my acoustic stuff sound so good."

I just checked the links and #3 is Motu #4 Sblive .. sorry about the confusion.
Thats funny that you say the SB sounds better... maybe its that I dont know all the tricks with it yet. Im debating taking it back and getting a creative piece of gear.

the motu 828 ***uses eight channels of balanced/unbalanced analog input and output using 24-bit converters with 105 dB dynamic range. Eight channels of 24-bit ADAT lightpipe and stereo S/PDIF I/O provide a grand total of 18 simultaneous inputs and outputs. ***
I opened the unit up to see the chips they use... and they just use two small m/c's the rest is pots and jacks... it doesnt look like $700... ive been using the SB platinum and its been doing the job

Wow! I it's funny how subjective your ears can be. As soon as I read that 4 was the MOTU I started hearing it as more detailed and smoother. Interesting that it was actually the sound blaster.

It's amazing how much we focus on gear and not the quality of the music itself. Don't get pro tools just cause everyone else has it. I don't think it will make that much of a difference. Your music sounds great recorded through the sound blaster. In this material world we live in everyone wants to convince you that you need this or that. Truth is most of the time you don't!


Keep pumping out the great tunes.
