Emu sound cards

I am thinking of getting either the EMU 1820 or 1820M to be used as preamp, compressor,, mizer, headphone amp, , soft synths (with Emulatorx and eastwest library) driven by a midi controller.

Could someone comment on how much better the M version is compared to the non M ?

I think the only difference is the daughter card for the SMTPE and Word clock. Other than that its a really cool card
 
Yep. Your right, just looked it up AK5394A on the M and PCM1804 on the 1820
 
I just found out that all of them use the 1010 PCI card. Does that mean only the digital to analog converters (DAC) are different ?
 
No, the ADC is different as well.

The 1010 is just a digital interface and DSP. It connects with the AudioDock which does the actual conversion.
 
I already have an Art tube pre. So I will get an 0404 to start. Maybe a year later I'll buy the 1820M
