I've been using the 1010lt for a while.

plus,

I got the EMU Proteus X as some will know uses the 0404 card (well not really, but you do have to have the card installed)
both in the same computer, I bought it for the synth but as a bonus I also use the "hardware" effects, CPU drain has been cut down.
Didn't have one problem with the install and works fine, plus the latency is lower using the Emu ASIO drivers, I guess since they came out with the latest drivers people have had less problems.

Both sound fine to me.

After much research I am going with the 0404. The latest drivers seem to be working great and I want 1/4 jacks vs RCA.

I got the 2496. It's been rock solid for me. Maybe a professional can hear a sound quality difference between the emu and the 2496, but I can't. I'm a newbie looking for a solid first step, and the 2496 hasn't failed. Not once have I had a driver (or hardware, for that matter) issue, and frankly, that's most important to me. The emus were newer at the time, and I didn't want to be an early adopter.

Just got the EMU0404. Downloaded the newest drivers. Running at less then 4ms latency in N-tracks. Sound is crystal clear. Great product! There is a sight learning curve with the patchbay. I am a computer tech so I figured it out quickly. Once around the curve the patchbay is quite useful!

So, you can only use Proteus X software on the 0404?

Well you have to have the 0404 installed (and enabled), they use it kind of like a key/dongle, if it doesn't see the hardware it won't work, you don't have to use the hardware though, it just has to be installed.

I gave my vote for the Audiophile. Just a month ago I was making research about these two cards. Emu was especially intriguing for me because of the onboard effects. But all the horror stories I kept reading in both Emu forum and KVR got me scared and I went with the Audiophile instead.

I have been really happy with the 2496: the sound is great and I have had zero problems even though I have the VIA chipset that causes problems to some people.

The EMU is a little better. THe 1212M is a LOT better. The 24/96 is a good card however you can't really lose for the dough, although I'd pick the 0404 on the merits of its similar sound quality, and the onboard effects. THe drivers are fine:) THe forum is open:) I have an 1820m and love it (same drivers):)

I am dumping my 0404. I have had it since march and it has crashed about 5 times. Awful digital screeching noise. its got to be the drivers. Nice features though, if I could get it more stable.

Did you upgrade the drivers? As best as I can tell, the latest version is solid.

You know, I have my 1820m for a long while and it hasn't crashed on me once. Funny.

I just bought the 0404. I voted for the Audiophile. Hope it's better.

As far as drivers go. I installed them Thursday, Friday and Sunday twice.

I just realized today that I have only been recording one channel from my mixer in all my recordings. The inputs on the Emu 0404 are stereo, but then they can't be combined to create a stereo track for when I record it into cubase or something. There is only one send available that will work, so I have to sacrifice the stereo output on my mixer.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do here? I think I will probably pan all my channels to the one so that I don't lose signal, but on things like ping pong delay, I don't know if there are any solutions. Does this make sense?

I use the emu0404. Works great for me. With the firmware updae you can record at 192K sample rate. That may be a little overkill for the home recording. Iv'e had no problem with mine. The only thing is that I play games and it will not work with some games. There wont be any audio for some games. I've read a post on some one emailing that problem to the tech support and they told him that it was pro-hardware and not a toy.

192k is overkill in any recording environment. I don't know of any pro studio that records 192k. EMU is a synth company. As far as I know these new cards are their first venture into recording in any format.

EMU is a synth company.

Not anymore, all their hardware has been discontinued for a while now. I know plenty off ppl that use the 0404 with no problems. The emulator and proteus cards have been around for a couple of years.

The big stumbling block has been the patchmix software which is cryptic as all hell. Read the manual, call tech support, whatever u need to do to figure it out but once you get it, it works really well. For cubase, there is a preset for Cubase ASIO which will give you all your channels

this is two month old post but still I have not had a crash related to my emu-0404. I dont know why it would crash for some and for some it works flawless. someone posted that you cant record sterio to a single track. well I can. this card has run stable for me I want to upgrade to the emu1820m. but theres still room to change my mind.

But remember they were one of the leaders in sampling and that's digital recording with converters and all...

i have owned an 0404 for about a year and i think it's great. no crashing, awesome sound balanced i/o's, digital ins and built in dsp. how can you beat that.
