I am setting up a home studio primarily to record vocals. I am trying to decided between the EMU 0404 USB 2.0 and the Presonus Firepod. I have read good things about both. I am mostly concerned with the qualityof the preamps. The preamps in my current soundcard are so loud I can't make a decent recording and I don't want to make this mistake again. If anyone has a perspective on the preamps for either the EMU 0404 USB or the Presonus Firepod I would greatly appreciate. I want to make a purchase soon.

I wouldn't touch either of them---the Emu because USB audio is unreliable at best, and the FIREPOD because I own one and I had a bad hardware failure experience, and I've heard several other folks here with hardware failures as well.

For something in the same ballpark as the FIREPOD, but more expandable and better build quality, I'd look into the MOTU 8Pre.

I would get the Firepod. Best computer recording piece of hardware I have purchased so far. I used to use an EMU 0404 PCI when I first got into recording and the learning curve is much harder than that of the Firepod.

A couple others to look at:

io26: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/prod...-26-Input-FireWire-Audio-Interface?sku=246031
Focusrite Saffire 10: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Focusrite-Saffire-Pro-10-IO?sku=241133

Both of them will give you more expandability than the Firepod, because firepod lacks ADAT. So if 8 channel lightpipe preamps come down in price in the future, you can add 8 inputs and preamps to your rig with one wire. I can not vouch for either of these products, but for the io26 you can check this thread over at Harmony Central for people with experience with the io26.
