freshears,
Yes, it is a far cry from kidnappings. That was just the drummer and me. We're working on more stuff like that. There's 4 more guys and a different songwriter for this project.
The noise you're hearing in the begining is the sound of a newbie engineer not understanding the power of a condensor mic. It's the singer rocking in his chair. I know better now. Thanks for listening.
bdbdbuck and toki - thanks for checking out the remix. I appreciate it. The clinic really helped me out!
Khomputer,
Glad you like it. While mixing this I cleared my ears with Eat a Peach a few times.
A subtle difference to be sure-I detected a touch more bass-and listening today I don't even mind what I called "dead time"--last time-sorry I even mentioned it ...I still didnt hear the kick-it would be nice to hear the kick and bass giving that pulse to the tune-like a heartbeat....reading about your recording techniques etc.its funny how closely it parallels me recording the band I'm in-we started out with crummy mics and as we recorded and mixed (over 2 yrs time! ) we got better mics and got better at recording too. Still a ways to go on my end -sounds like you're doing well with your setup.
Full-on Tom Petty, eh? Nice. Sweet jazzy drum intro... drums are mono? They sound it... except the bongos. Nice hardpan gittie candy for the ears.
Ebows eh? A poorman's method of endless feedback (sorry... we all use the lil bastards too )
Are you shoveling snow in the background? Sorry, that shuffly sound is killin me. I picture Manson rubbing his pantlegs and drooling in his beard, or something
Sparkly musicianship. Very cool. Minor timing issues. Would need more listens for some real nitpicky stuff... not too much sticks out like a sore nose. Nice.
The mix was a bit quiet I thought. There's much more headroom there.
The sound was a bit "thin" to my ears. To me, there needs to be another part to thicken up the sound. Maybe a nice acoustic guit just strumming the chords. Doubled vocals... tripled vocals. I think that would sound nice (I always seem to say that ).
I don't think the vocals were over compressed. Some vox got a bit lost. If anything I'd compress a bit heavier.
The guitars were balanced very well I thought. I'm listening on headphones and they weren't distracting - that's a pretty good test.
Can't answer you for sure on bass because of the phones, but I'm guessing you could bring it up a bit.
Maybe shorten the fade in. Seemd a bit long to me.
