OK, heres the deal. My drummer is REALLY set on buying a DRUMSET within the next few days. He has about $2000-2500 for shells, and is looking for 2 TOMS and a BIG KICK, like a 24-26"! We're gonna buy the snare and hardware seperately. We're using the set for both gigging and recording! I have a small drumset (18" kick) so were looking for a BIG SOUNDING set for a change! We like to have choices when recording. $2500 in your hands, what would you guys do? DW, Pearl, Ludwig, Gretch?....Maple, Birch, Mahogony?....HELP!
Thanks,
Rob

We meet once again end... lol. With that amount? Hmmm... personally I would go for a DW. Now there are different types of finishes... that depends solely on the drummer. Some would argue that you could find a more inexpensive, yet professional, drumset and use the left over money on hardware and cymbals. But IMO, nothing beats a DW drumset. Try checking them out on the web. :)

Build

Maple Keller shells (what all the big boys use). You can get them with all the cutting and drilling done for you then your almost home with a kit that is YOUR'S and EXACTLY what you want. Plenty of sites to check for info.

For that kinda money, your best bet it a set of Pearl Masters. DW is over priced, in my opinion anyway. And anyone that you ask that plays Pearl will tell you they're just as good, for not quite the same price.

If you plan on buying the snare and hardware seperately, it doesn't matter much about that. But the Masters kits are one of my favorites to play. Pearl makes great drums, and great hardware.

Well, I'm no drummer, so take this for what it's worth. A good friend of mine is an excellent drummer and he's got a Gretsch USA Maple kit that rocks! The kick sounds huge (not sure what size). The drummer in my last band had a really nice custom DW kit but I don't think it sounded "better" than my friend's Gretsch kit.

My non-drumming $.02.

Ask 10 people and you'll get 10 different answers.
I'd reccomend a Tama Starclassic Maple.
Birch shells are tended to be preferred by recording drummers and maple's are preferred by gigging drummers.
I have a Tama Starclassic Performer EFX Birch which sounds great live and in the studio.
You could always go to your local SamAsh/Guitar Center and play as many sets as you can.

If you want to build your own, check out www.drummaker.com. They sell every part you'll need for building your own.

Good luck!

i would definitly go with pearl over dw b/c dw has got the great looks but pearl has tht great sound tht cooks

I'd recommend my kit, exactly the way i set it up.

Sorry, uncalled for.

I play a Yamaha Stage Custom and have done for 8 years, i dislike Pearl for no particular reason i can think of. If i'd bought a Pearl kit 8 years ago, i'd probably love it. I recommend you don't rush into buying a kit, especially with that sort of dosh to spend. Your drummer needs to play some kits/cymbals and see what suits, i just found that instinctively i really liked playing the kit i ended up buying more than any others, and now i love it like a wife (don't tell my wife). At the risk of sounding all fucking hippy and far-out, you get to know a kit after a time, you get used to the response you get when you hit it and it's not something you can get in full from sitting in a drum store for half an hour trying stuff out.

That said, if you're after ideas of which kits are reliable, i can vouch for Yamaha Stage Custom.

I play pearl but my friends star classic has a bigger bass sound.
Shop around and be critical,This is the kit he'll be playing for awhile!

thanks guys

Hey Enrique, whats up man! Anyways we just went drum shopping today. Didn't buy anything of course. My drummer is so sold on DW, just from reputation and playing one once at a friends house. "I think when you go up to the top-end stuff, you can't go wrong with any brand" I say to him. But he is what you call "determined". I will say I'm not about to argue with him on getting a DW. Nice drums I've heard. We did some pricing for a MAPLE kit with 24" KICK, 13" TOM, and 18" FLOOR TOM, plus ALL THE HARDWARE (9000 Series). Came out to around.....$3400! And my drummer saids "OK". I couldn't believe how much he's willing to spend. I NOW think price isn't an issue for him. He just wants the best. But is DW the best? And for THAT KINDA MONEY?!
Thanks guys,
Rob

My friend recently invested in a Tama StarClassic, birch shells. Man that is one nice sounding kit, and the quality of the hardware and fittings is superb

Just remember that head selection and tuning methods will change the sound a hell of a lot too.. Buy the biggest bass drum you can find, doesn't mean it will sound good with crappy heads and crappy tuning!

If you're getting a 24" kick, make sure to buy some spare heads. I've never known a shop to stock them, and I can't imagine a large selection anywhere. You could probably expect to wait a while to order one everytime you need to replace them.

It's all about taste

I remember hearing my friends Slingerland in the 80s and I swear the toms were the best I ever heard.Your right It's all about tuning.Theres nothing wrong about D.W. just make sure their road worthy If you gig alot! :)

yup, $3400!

Thanks everyone for the advice. It is used everytime! And yes, that is the price for top of the line DW. I didn't say the average price for top of the line drums, but for DW drums.
Thanks,
Rob

You should probably check out Conaway drums as well. http://www.conawaydrums.com is their site. They make completely custom drums for really reasonable prices. You can get everything completely custom as well.

i have a mapex saturn pro, and it wasn't that much... you could probablly get their orion or even deep forest project (hand made) kits for that price. I love my set and it does grow on you (like someone said about any quality kit thats yours in a previous post)... I'm all about mapex, I really don't know why, it's a quality kit, I can tell you that... worth every penny.

my 2 cents
