OK NOW THIS SUCKS. AS WE SPEAK IM IN THE MIDDLE OF A SESSION WITH 2 DA 38'S AND ALL OF A SUDDEN ON PLAYBACK ALL THE TRACKS ARE CRACKING AND POPING AND GOING IN AND OUT!!!!!! IT SOUNDS LIKE A MAJOR WIRE SHORTAGE! I PUT IN OTHER TAPES AND THE SAME THING HAPPENS SO I KNOW ITS NOT THE TAPES. I CHECKED ALL CONNECTIONS AND THEY ARE SOLID, NO NOISE AT ALL WHEN LIGHTLY SHOOK. WHEN THE TRACKS DISSAPEAR IF I HIT THE JOG SHUTTLE WHEEL THEY WILL COME BACK ON FOR THAT PURPOSE THAN GO AWAY AS SOON AS I EXIT THAT MODE. COULD A STATIC ELECTRICIC SHOCK WIPE OUT MY PLABACK HEADS? THATS THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD MAKE SENSE TO ME. BUT THE SECOND MACHINE WAS OFF!!!!
I CLEANED THE HEADS AND RE-INITALIZED BOTH UNITS AND NOTHING. I AM TOTALLY PUZZLED. PLEASE ALL YOU GURUS HELP ME!!!!!!!!!! I AM WAITING FOR REPLYS AS YOU READ THIS.

That's pretty wierd that both units are popping. How are you clocking them? What are you syncing them to?

As hard as it is, you should relax, take a breather, and sit down with your client and explain to them that you're having technical difficulties. Tell them you won't be charging for the downtime, obviously, and ask them if there is a convenient time to reschedule the session.

This kind of thing happens from time to time. Remember, if you're cool and calm about it, then they'll understand and be totally cool with it. If you're all stessed out and overly-apologetic about it, they'll think you're an idiot.

You have only two other options:

* Just tell them that they really suck today and their energy is way off, and you think they should come back another time, or risk putting out a completely worthless product. :D :D :D

* Pretend that the phone rang, say some stuff in to the receiver like "Oh dear. Is he/she going to be alright? I am SO sorry to hear about that . . . my thoughts and prayers will be with him/her " etc etc. Make sure that they can hear you. Then just walk in and tell them that a personal emergency has popped up and you have to call the session short. Apologize, and send them on their way.

I had something similar in a completely different setup (Delta66->SoundForge, with Cubase going to monitors) - here are possible causes (bad settings I discovered later):

sample clock set to external sync
routing algorithm picked up inbound signal twice

we finally burned an accomp CD, turned off cubase, recorded her into SF with a boom box playing the accompaniment in headphones. Cleaned the signal up, but I wish we had trouble shot then - clock was ticking, you know what that's like.

Good luck.

Just tell them that popping, crackly sounding tracks are IN! ;)

Remember Teardrop by Massive Attack?... Lotsa crackles... Great track!

On a more serious note... good luck with your problem!

That's what I'd guess too -- clock weirdness....

Did someone change sample rates on ya by accident maybe???

thanks for all the input and help guys! this is what happened, after i posted the thread, i went back at it to try and figure it all out and i hit play and everything worked just fine. dont ask cause i dont know. it was like nothing had happened. very strange. well since i have been looking at getting that alesis hd24 i think i might do it sooner now. it was like something from the x-files.
thank you all!

Chess, that is priceless !! Duly noted and saved for another day!
Thanks Mitch

i spoke to soon.
my little problem is back. i checked out the sample rate and both are at 44.1khz.
i dont know what i did or what happened for this to come about.
the strange thing is that the problem happened to both machines at the same time. its gotta be some setting in some menu in there.
any ideas?

Damn, your a fake.
Just tell them what happened, not make up some bullshit excuse.

do a hard factory reset, see what happens. fixes most of my problems.

Normally, that would be my recommendation . . . to someone who wasn't completely freaking out already. The quickest way to lose someone's confidence in your abilities and trash the whole vibe is to give them the impression that you don't have a clue as to what's wrong and it's stressing you out.

If you can take a breather, collect yourself and tell them with confidence what the problem is, that you need some time to figure it out but you're not worried about it, then by all means . . .

I appreciate your input though. Give it up for Mr. Six-posts! :D

well chess it realy didnt matter if i was freaking out or not cause in the session i was the client! and i would bet my mp2nv that if your recorders went down youd be freaked out too! than enter in the fact that i had just spent 2k on new gear just the week before!

Well, in that case, this definitely gets trickier. The good thing is that if your client thinks you're an idiot, you won't necessarily lose his, uh, your business over it all. Just tell yourself it was a big misunderstanding, and that you'll get the situation rectified in no time. I'm sure you'll understand.

this has nothing to do with mics but this forum is a higher traffic forum than the tascam one so i put it here in hopes of gettin back on track quickly.
well chess yes i am an idiot. i would never deny that. but do you have any insight to what could possably be the problem? oh and when shit breaks down at the studio i work at i am very calm about it espically since i didnt pay a fortune for a 2 inch mci recorder and i dont have to pay the repair bill either. but it is the band that suffers. that sucks.

Don't be so hard on yourself. This kind of thing happens from time to time. Just never let you see yourself sweat. :D
