Allright...here it goes:

When mixing, I have heared it is best to do most of it in MONO and then A/B it w/ stereo to figure out where to put stuff.
I have a Mackie 1604 VLZ is keeping all of the channels to the center considered MONO?

Dont Hit me,
Twonk

yup

I would like to hear an answer to this, because I had the very same question.

yup, i'd like ta know except i am not a newbie like the poster of this thread so if you respond in a "disdain for newbie fashion" everyone should know that that only applies to him and not to me, mmkay?

It might not be entirely mono, since you might still have sterio effects applied (spacious reverb, delays bouncing around, etc). I think it might be mono enough as far as the "do any phasing issues jump up/do any instruments disappear" issue is concerned. To get it totally mono, make sure your effects are only sending one channel back to the board. I'm no expert on this subject either, so you might want to double check what I just said.

Edit: If you really want to make sure it is totally mono, pan everything left and shut off your right speaker. Can't be sterio with only one speaker.

Edit again:
I have a Mackie 1604 VLZ
That's a great board, isn't it?:)

You can certainly do it that way -- if you get the tracks to sound distinct and clear in a mono mix, you're off to a great start....

Many however still work in stereo and do an occasional mono check as they work thru the mix....

Do whatever works best for you........

All I do on this BBS is ask the hardhitting semi-retarded sort of obvious questions, Khompewtur, so I am not afraid of mockery or misspelling words.

Chili, I kind of fall in and out of love w/ that board as time goes on. Primarily because I'll record something that really sounds like crap, and I'll be all "well this sucks cuz the Makie made it sound brittle and bad!". Then other times it'll be like some mystic recording Swami touches me and everything sounds fucking godhead! So it really depends. But in the last couple of days I have found out about some really cool stuff it can do that I didn't know about, so I like it right now. Although I am slowly starting to realize TAPE RETURNS would be really nice.

Thanks for the guys

good twonky, u go for it.

I just wanted to carefully test the waters so that IF you did get flamed, none of it would splash on me.

Since you didn't get bashed very much i would like to say that I was behind twonky's line of inquiry from the very start.

In fact, it was me who inspired twonky to actually begin this thread. Yes I recall quoting directly "twonky, i think you should ask that stereo question, it will definitely make you look inquisitive and increase your stature. I will stay behind the scenes and allow you to establish an independant rapport with the mixing board community ready to step forward in support should you need me"

No need to thank me friend. Any time.

That's actually pretty funny!

Welcome aboard K....

:)

That was funny.

In fact Bruce, it was I who inspired Khompewtur to post that intelligent and funny response. While not wanting to take all the credit for my jaw dropping wit and enormous brain power, I often take newbies aside and tell them what I would say if I were a newbie and wanted the old-timers to warm up to me. It appears, in this case, to have been a success.

No need to thank me, Khomp, ol' pal!

;)

Shhhh!! you agreed you wouldn't tell!!!

What good does that do me, now i'm just like that reject from "Can't buy me love" who dances spastically.

Sorry Khomp - you are correct, I shouldn't have said anything.

I admit it - I was just padding my ego because, well, because I am simply a boy with a burlap sack for a body. No arms. No legs. Just a burlap sack - full of leaves.

And that guy Bruce? He is always boasting about his ducks. And I don't have any prize winning ducks. I was just trying to impress him.

Don't worry, not many will see this. Everybody mostly hangs out in the Cave anyway.

Sorry. :(

Hey Khomp....

Wanna buy a duck?

(serious question....)

Bruce

I wouldn't start a mix in mono and then go stereo but as Bruce said I would check it in mono and if you have a clear mix and it sounds good then you got it nailed !

This is freakin' me out!!

Very tricky Khomp, using the "brain" of you human shield to get the info so you can learn sumpin' and not look like a dum dum.

So, Mr. subliminal The Shining-having-interstate-surrogate-brain-question asker, please will me to ask if I could use the MONO out on my mixer to acheive the same result?
